I am doing a research paper on the psychological reasons why Snape acted the way he did in the Harry Potter series. I need this paper to be eight pages and so far I only have two. I already have written how bullying affected him and how his parents neglecting him affected him. I also plan to write something about how his rejection by Lily affected him. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find information on this part. Also, does anyone have more ideas? Or does anyone have any information to share about the other ideas so I can possibly get another page or two out of them?

I think an important part of Snape's character is his relationship with Dumbledore. Despite the fact that they differ in their attitudes towards teaching, Snape trusts Dumbledore completely.

And how about looking at Potions as a discipline? From what I understood, it takes a great deal of knowledge and discipline to master Potions. You could talk about how Snape was an impressive student (a nerd...which got him grief from James Potter and co.) and used Potions as an outlet. Good luck!

Couldn't it be also possible that Snape acted like that to keep some distance between him and Harry? I mean, in the end, you could easily tell that he cared for Harry so much he wanted to keep him away from harm's way. And also the part where Snape personally teaches Harry some magic backs up what I just said to some point, I believe...

I think you should take a closer look into Snape's personality rather than the things that affected him. Try to firgure out why he prefers to do things solo, take things seriously all the time, over-protected and such; all those things could give you more and more things to write about and discuss. Wish you the best in your research, tell us how it went when you're done =)

Interesting research, wish we had some of that here :/

I think Snape acted the way he did, because even if Lily had rejected him, his feelings for her never went away. He was jealous and angry at James Potter's luck of being with the woman he loved most. He couldn't look Harry in the eyes because they resembled that of his mother.

I don't think Snape gave Harry a hard time because of his previous experience. It was all just a part of the play they've put to show that Snape hates Harry, so Voldemort never loses his trust in Snape and thinks of him as his servant or part of the Death Eaters. Had Snape been kind and loving to Harry, that would contradict his loyalty to Voldemort, because let's not forget, Harry was Voldemorts's troubling enemy. So even if he wanted, he could never have been nice to Harry. It was all part of the act that finally clarified itself in the end.. When Snape dies and shows Harry the truth of things.. **Spoiler** Dear god I remember cryinglol I so loved him at the end! Hated him with Dumbledore thing, but loved him when the truth comes out in the end or so T____T

I hope that made sense :/ It is what I think and adds as an idea or so.

Cheers,
M

Thank you so much. All of these opinions are helping me get more information to add to my paper.
