hi mugwump, its not the purpose of the book but the pathfinder by james fenimore cooper has what youre looking for---and is made all the more poignant by the main character's experiences in the deerslayer and especially in the last of the mohicans.

I've yet to read Love In The Time of Cholera in translation, but Marquez loyalists say it is the unrequited love story for the close of the 20th century. I have read enough of Marquez to know that when he is on, his fiction just bubbles with overwrought sensationalism which is credible to that touchstone of human longing.
