The other day I was taking my girls out for a walk while my wife was working. As we were leaving our house there was a woman walking along the road. She was wearing very form fitting spandex which showed every detail of her hips, legs, and even her...well... I shouldn't have to say that even though almost all men would have (at the very least) done a double take when seeing a woman wearing tight form fitting clothing. There are some people (men and women alike) that need to realize that modest apparel IS A MUST!!

UNPLEASANT/HORRIFIC/GRUESOME/UNTHINKABLE...these are understatements...

So at a branding once there was one yearling that was acting really weird and fiesty. She ended up hopping a fence so the owner put a dog on her. She wouldnt budge so the dog nipped at one of her ankles and maggots literally poured out of the little cut in her leg. Live cow, FULL of maggots. She must have gotten skipped or something when they were spraying.

Maggots are by far the most disgusting things I have ever seen. And I've seen a lot of stuff working for a vet.

What I wish I hadn't saw:

I went to a Catholic high school whose uniform included a kilt. And being teenagers, the girls knew every trick in the book for making the kilt shorter (there is a technique to rolling up a kilt properly at the waist lol). And another part of the uniform is the spandex shorts that go under the kilt for obvious reasons. Well, there are some girls who took the kilt to whole new levels. One day in english class, the girl sitting in the desk in front of me stood up and leaned over her desk. Not only was her kilt barely long enough to cover her *** while she was standing, it was made obsolete by bending.

And apparently she didn't believe in shorts. Or any sort of underwear beyond a g-string.

I wanted to burn my eyes out.

We had to wear kilts at my school also. Well, actually, you could wear pants if you wanted to as long as they were uniform pants and I liked to wear the pants, especially when I was too lazy to shave in the shower. But, I did wear the kilts also and so did a lot of other people. I wore boxers underneath my kilt. The teachers began complaining about the peep shows they were getting from the front of the classroom teaching a bunch of girls wearing too short kilts and no boxers. One day in Spanish class, our teacher decided that we would sit in a circle and do an exercise with the person seated next to us. I was thinking this was kind of a weird seating arrangement to do a short easy exercise with a partner. WE finished quickly and had nothing to do but twirl our thumbs and chit chat. I happened to look up at one of the girls seated across from me in the circle. She was a little chunky and she was wearing a kilt with her legs splayed...and she wasn't wearing boxers or spandex or anything:eek2:.

I knew what the teachers were complaining about then, and made sure to wear pants from there on out just in case I was one of the offenders...

Two things, both at my workplace:

Two six foot red kangaroos had freaked out in their enclosure and run into each other. They both had broken necks and their huge, powerful bodies were flopping around like fish. The worst part was the tourists trying to get closer to gawk and take pictures. I had to stand over the kangaroos and keep the tourists away while trying not to cry.

A wallaby had run into a rock and snapped it's leg in half, I had to chase it down while it tried to get away on it's one and a half legs. I caught it, but the sight of it trying to hop on it's dangling leg was one of the most horrific things I've ever seen.

Just in case you haven't realised, wallabies and kangaroos are very nervous and flighty creatures, even when "tame" and they will smash into things when distressed.

CC and Shalot - :eek2: We'd quite often roll up our skirts at school to make them shorter, but I don't remember anyone wearing theirs that short with that little underneath!!

That picture of me that one of my "friends" put up on Facebook: Okay, okay, so I went to college in the mid-90s; yes, I had long hair and wore flannel shirts; yes, I looked like every other buffoon who dressed that way.

Sheesh! I'm so over that stage now. *goes back to listening to REM & Nirvana on his Ipod* ;)

IJustMadeThatUp -- man, that must have been really hard. This paragraph nearly made me cry.

It also made me remember a story from last spring. One night, we heard this noise on our porch that usually means a bear is nosing around under the humming bird feeder. I got out the spotlight to see what it was, and I was right: a bear. But the thing was walking all weird. I opened the door slightly to get a better look, and saw that its back legs were dragging on the ground, paralyzed and limp. Worse, yet, the skin on the underside of its paws was worn to the bone. . . . . literally. Undoubtedly, it had been dragging its hind quarters behind for a long time now.

When it smelt me it rather quickly "ran" into the woods behind our house. I never saw the poor thing again. I called the local wildlife people the next day to tell them what we saw.

Worse still, was that my oldest daughter saw the poor bear too and asked what was wrong with it. (Usually there's great excitement about having a bear on our porch). Having to explain it to her was the first time that I really had to describe to her the cruelty of natural world, something I had somewhat sheltered her from before so as to help foster a profound love of animals and nature.

Sorry for the rant.

Don't be sorry! I struggle a bit with the harshness of nature too. I've seen some horrible things, but some beautiful things too. I don't know which gets me worse emotionally  I'm a bit of a sook.

It's such an honourable thing to be teaching your daughters a respect of nature and animals. We need more people like you! (Even though I've met quite a few on litnet already!!) :D

I saw my husband's uncle shoot a dog. The dog needed to be put down, but this was the most horrific thing I've ever seen because he shot the dog and the dog didn't fall down and die. He ran and turned and was like "why are you shooting me." We were in the car driving away and I didn't see anymore after that. I was very upset and kept asking why they had to do it like that. I hate to see a dog die.

I don't think I like this thread much. Shalot, that story is dreadful. It has just put me in a gloomy mood. I hate to think about any living thing feeling pain or suffering.
