What is the name of the card system that librarys use to tell you where they put the books on the shelf... or rather which books they have on the shelf?

THey are usually organized alphabetically by author or title... you guys know what i'm talking about?

Is there a name for this system?

that is the name of the numbers on the back of the books, not the name of the cards that you use to look them up, right?

As far as I know Dewey is the numbering system you see on the back of the numbers... Like DAR 345.001 or something like that... As for the catalogues... Alphabetical Index? Catalogue? WHy don't you call your local library and ask them to be sure?

And please let us know as well! :)

Woah, they're hardly used here anymore, it's all computer database organised as far as searching for books, but, it is referred to as the `Card Catalogue', the little grubby dog-eared falling apart index card thingys that every single book was noted on.

Some special collections, like newspapers and such, are still recorded on them as well as in the computer database, at least in the libraries I use.

I haven't seen them used for along time, either but waaaayy back while I was at university, they were still being used along with computers.
