For an Independent Reading Proj, i have been assigned to read a novel or collection of short stories by a critically acclaimed 20th century author. I hope to get some suggestions for novels which fit this criteria, as well as the following:

- Preferably under 300 pages
- No dialect, incomprehensible ramblings, etc
- Should be memorable and keep me wanting to read more

Some of my favorites include; (Fear and Loathing in LV, Eye of the Needle, Fountainhead)

I may be asking for too much, but surely there are some novels out there that fit these criteria.

Thanks!!!

Orwell, Steinbeck, Sinclair.
Or for extra simplicity, The Old Man and the Sea by Hemmingway.

Steinbeck's 'The Moon is Down' or 'Of Mice and Men' --- Any collection of short stories by O. Henry (turn of the 20th century, actually) --- Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'... --- Graham Greene's 'The End of the Affair' --- Simone de Beauvoir's 'The Blood of Others'... I could go on and on... :)

any thoughts on dostoevsky's "notes from underground", camel's "the stranger", or keser's "one flew over the cuckoo's nest"?
