mama see our pretty
flag we'll come home heroes
people will remember
us always,
mommy are you
proud of your little boy?
i didn't rape anyone today
didn't take any souvenirs,
i have enough teeth to
show my grandchildren

mama am i a hero yet?

*it was horrific sitting through the WWII lecture on wednesday. i'm not trying to imply that these men took teeth; however, others did. i just encapsulated both in the interest of space.

....whew........powerful stuff........horrific acts directed against fellow human beings always stun me.....

I think your poem softens the horror by focusing on this person's refusal to accept his actions as anything other than justified, normal behavior, heroic in the course of war.........not too sure if that is good, but I'm absolute in my belief it wasn't your intention to soften the horror....

As always, you have a way with words......thanks for sharing your inner response to the lecture......I love the fact you included the source of your insight....

Wow, amuse, very powerful words!
From the standpoint of a child, seemingly, and the literal language, the concrete meanings behind it, combine to strongly show the many horrors, and few advantages, if I may say, of war. Apparent "heroes" can certainly seem the perpretrators, beneath the veil.
Bravo! :)

I think it's strong anyway, not really softened...the speaker is too naive to realise, he just things that that's the natural order of things...
