Sonnet #12

XII.br /br /When I do count the clock that tells the time,br /And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;br /When I behold the violet past prime,br /And sable curls all silver'd o'er with white;br /When lofty trees I see barren of leavesbr /Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,br /And summer's green all girded up in sheavesbr /Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard,br /Then of thy beauty do I question make,br /That thou among the wastes of time must go,br /Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsakebr /And die as fast as they see others grow;br /And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defencebr /Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.
