hey guys,
I'm looking for music recommendations. My hubby and me both like 60s, 70s, 80s and tend to think that there was/ is hardly any good music after that. So I'm looking for song recommendations. Is there any good contemporary music? What I mean is music that is innovative, maybe a bit artsy or raw and has lyrics a bit more intelligent then "yeah, I'm the sexiest b#tch in town"..... Good 60s impostors like the White Stripes or whatsname (the girl who sings "Mercy") are welcome, too.
thanks :)
(P.S.: would be nice if they are on youtube or myspace)

My stand by is white stripes but you already mentioned them. Back home I was in a store that was playing some really good music that I asked the salesperson the band is called Brassy. Idril got me hooked on Gram Rabbit. Detroit Cobras.

If you are fine with listening to music in Portuguese, I’d recommend Portuguese band Madredeus and Brazilian composer/singer Marisa Monte.

I'd have to recommend my favorite artist of all time. Emilie Autumn. She does a wide variety of different styles of music, so chances are that you may prefer one style over another. If you listen to her other songs you will find references to and from Shakespeare and a song based off of The Lady of Shalott, I would think that would be a plus for someone who is into literature.

Classical:

Her more softer/Celtic-influenced songs:

Victorianindustrial-style violin:

Jazz/Blues: (This project is put on hold at the moment but its great)

And finally, more poppy but dark:

Detroit Cobras.

nice :). but it sounds suspiciously like Let's Twist Again with a bit of Janis Joplin thrown in.

How about Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust? I especially enjoyed the video of this one.
Yep, I knew that song. To be (compulsively?) honest, I like it OK, but it's a bit too mainstreamy.

thanks Gustavo. I loved the first song by Madredeus. I like listening to music in foreign languages.

wow. I can see why she's your favorite artist. She's absolutely amazing. I'm mad at you, because now I'll have to spend hours on youtube listening to all her songs. :)

thanks for everyone's recommendations so far. will comment on the other songs later.

My music sense had stopped from 2000 onwards. Since then it went backward. I don't think there's any band really worth checking these days.

Looking over the music in my computer and excluding the mainstream, the classical, the Estonian (usually quite word-oriented, so you would miss most of the point) and anything else before the 90s I am left with these options.

Anouar Brahem - a Tunisian composer whose work (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1dH2v-V6y0)s I much enjoy.

Poeta Magica - here's a song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1sBCfHkz4A) by them. A folk/medieval band.

Although I said I excluded the Estonian, I will make a reference to Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtFPdBUl7XQ) is from the 70s though, but it gives an idea of his style.

And when I am at Estonian national composers, I should refer to Veljo Tormis(example) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UauaBMTFeE), whose style is totally different. A tad repetitive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoYSCASuukk) perhaps since he uses a lot of Estonian and Finno-Ugric archaic folk-songs, but can occasionally be quite powerful.

Also, Voltaire can sometimes be quite witty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02NdYatx76Q).

But other things I enjoy are either old (Pink Floyd, Miles Davis etc), very old (Rachmaninov, Prokofiev), even older(Bach, Mozart) or Estonian word-oriented(Vennaskond, Metro Luminal, Ruja) so can't help you there.
Perhaps I should too take suggestions from this thread.

Homer, is Emilie Autumn something emo kids would listen to? I'm a little obsessed with figuring out emo kids these days because some of them seem to be "true" emos and others just trend-riders.

Umm... she's not emo as in the actual music genre. But as far as if emos would follow her, I'm not even sure what a true emo is. I'm a teenager and I should know but unfortunately I could never figure out which were posers and which were considered 'true.' But, she's an underground artist, so she is not very well-known and not widely accepted (yet) by the mass amount of emos nowadays.

edit: Well, I'm glad that you like her anyway. =] If you need any information or mp3s, don't hesitate to ask.

I meant to add Frank Black also - I don't know if you're familiar with him or not. He was lead singer of the Pixies in the 80's and then the Pixies broke up in the early 90's and he put out some solo work. The Pixies and Frank Black were more popular in Europe than they were here in the US so, I'm not real sure that I'm recommending anything that you're not familiar with already. But anyway, here are a few of my favorite Frank Black songs:

You possibly won't like the Corrs because they don't look any different from common girls, but they aren't completely commercial ... (they're 70% nice, and 30% bad ... All you have to do is not to buy what's bad.) I'd begin through their live show in Wicklow, 1999, the "Unplugged". Very sweet. However, perhaps you won't like it.

The Chieftains have some cds more recent ... I think there's one "The Chieftains & friends", which I'm about to look for .. (as soon as I get money, for I'm in ay .. er tough days).

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

UH YAH!!!!! Radiohead is my favorite band of all time. Of Montreal is pretty good. Really quirky, fun and innovative. Plus they put on a great show. Cloud Cult is also a great band. They, like Radiohead, are innovative and you can't categorize them into one genre because of their different styles. All of these bands have intelligent lyrics and great musical compositions.

Another interesting band is Low. When they prefer live, they turn their sound really 'low'. They are not very, uhh perky. But they have amazing music compositions and the vocals are equally amazing. Portishead is a dark, melodic trip-hop band. Her voice is astounding. Also, Elliott Smith is a folky-punk(?) singer/writer. He has a great sound as well--check out the song Condor Ave. Cake, Sia, Sigur Ros, Röyksopp and please, please check out José González. All are extraordinary. Sigur Ros and Röyksopp are pretty ambient and have interesting lyrics. They are great, I love painting to their music. Sia has amazing vocals and she has done a lot in the house/electronica(not techno) music world. Cake, well my friend told me to post them...but they are definitely worth listening to. They have good lyrics and musical style. Oh and if you like Radiohead, check out the singer's solo stuff--Thom Yorke.
:D

Sorry, forgot to post the youtube links. Also, check out Pandora.com --it is a free online radio and you can put in artists that you love and it will match them up with similar artists. That is how I found out about some of my favorite bands.:thumbs_up

For something different and with definitely interesting lyrics, The Knife. No matter how many times I discuss the lyrics of Marble House with people, we always come up with different ideas.

Marble House (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WhQ5TiBHVk)
Forest Families (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVYoav19Tog)
A Lung (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOfG91mohm8)

You mentioned The White Stripes, have you listened to Jack White's other band, The Raconteurs? Oh and now he has another band, The Dead Weather.

Then my mentions would just be of the bands I love. Placebo, Architecture In Helsinki, Moby, oh, and Secret and Whisper. I love the lyrics to Looming Moon

We are spending all our time away from one another
We are coming to a tender age of miracles and robbers
We try to live a life respecting all the animals
Like wind behind the grass in sway
Asleep at certain times of day

Don't turn away looming moon
You'll have your revenge very soon
Don't turn away from what you love
Soon you'll be finding it's much too tough

I have thought of sharing all these different feelings,
From under covers
We try to live a life respecting all the animals

May we all turn into leaves that crack and break apart
And I'm anxious to relieve my mind from desperate thoughts
I hope you remember me always

Bright Eyes is definitely more folky type music, but I love them and Conor Oberst's lyrics are amazing
Four Winds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaV-nGQ5yqw)
Clairaudients (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f21cqrNYQ70) (It helps to know about the song - the start is recordings of psychics talking about Cassadaga. It does eventually become a real song in the sense of singing and nicer music)

Then apart from that, other bands that aren't really mainstream (at least not here) are The Sea and Cake, Cold War Kids, School Of Seven Bells. Well, thats the stuff I listen to anywho.
Weekend - The Sea and Cake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd1-pkdi5BI)
Something Is Not Right With Me - Cold War Kids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2JNE-sgA74)
Half Asleep - School Of Seven Bells (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1An2pjS4mKE)

Oh, and I'll agree with the below posts over Placebo, The Dead Weather and Cold War Kids. I prefer The Dead Weather to all of Jack White's other bands...although they are all really good.

The Dresden Dolls are really, really cool. There is two members to the band. The pianist/vocals and a drummer who does extraordinary things with his instrument. Very witty lyrics and AWESOME music comps. The clash between the drums and piano is very cool, plus she has an amazing voice. Another band that is very funny and smart is Ludo. Not only are they super amazing live, but on CD they are just as brilliant. The Hanks are more mellow/indie, but the vocals are really good. The Flaming Lips started in the 80's, but they became popular in the 90's...I've met them before and they are really cool guys.

I think...we have a lot in common judging by your music list. i think the only band that I don't like on your list is The Beastie Boys. I absolutely adore Pavement. Classic.

Oh, a band that I recently got into is Home Video...actually it's a duo that has similar music to Radiohead and a lot of the other bands that I listed in my first post. Also, Blonde Redhead is pretty good as well. A lot of the music I've suggested has been electronic or house or trip-hop based...with a few exceptions, but they are all very creative and well developed. Emilie Simon is also really good...her voice is breath taking and she is very mellow. If you've heard of Kate Bush, then I think you will like her.

I think people are still making wonderful music, though there is also a lot of "what on earth where they thinking" around. The times in which you grow up do shape your taste in music though, and as everything develops one might find that the music of the past is the best. However, if you just look around you there is all this new stuff to listen to :D And this is a nice thread to find out about that. Thank you for starting this SleepyWitch

Yes you're right. I thought the question was if there was any good music in the 90s. While U2 did start in the 80s some of their stuff spilled over. I guess I would agree that U2 is an 80s band who kept on playing, like the Stones are a 60s and 70s band who kept on playing.

I agree with you Homers_Child. It is an interesting juxtaposition between her smooth, elegant vocals and then the electronic/industrial background.

I don't think Achtung Baby gets enough credit. All of my friends prefer Joshua Tree or even U2's newest album...the Mass Destruction one or whatever. Actually, Shalot and Virgil, you two are the only people aside from my guitar friends and I that prefer Achtung Baby over Joshua Tree!!! I'm excited.:)

No good music since the 80's? What is that supposed to mean? Do you believe musician's brains have become tinier and they can't write good music anymore? Anyway, though it is not my favorite kind of music (I'm a jazzman), I always get very satisfied with radiohead's work. I mean, they're a commercial success and they never play mainstream and stereotyped music like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHBVnMf2t7w

Radiohead is a very apt suggestion indeed. The best band of the 90's? Yes.

As for the U2 albums, I must say I love both Joshua and Achtung, but I prefer Joshua. Not a single bad song in that album, whereas Achtung varies between absolute brilliance and funky but ultimately tepid lovey-dovey stuff. As I'm a literature man first and foremost I value lyrics a lot, and in that respect Joshua, I think, is much better than Achtung.
