“Neither” is forever fixed to “nor.”
“Then” implies “before.”
Language is a narrative
we can bend but never give
a wholly new direction.
We are but language’s reflection.

Language is a narrative / we can bend but never give / a wholly new direction

I love this image that we are all on the same path when writing and we are going in the same direction. Also that we can alter the path slightly - put a bend in it - for when the next person comes along.

To be honest, I wasn't thinking about the one who would come next, although the American scholar Harold Bloom put forward the thesis that every poet writes in the conext of all the poetry that came before her or him and is in a sense conversing with it.
