So I was laying in bed, and this popped into my mind (kind of, the concept at least.) So I got up and wrote it down, and hopped on litnet to post it. :)
The Rat in my kitchen
Rat,
You verminous, discusting little creature.
You dart past the cheese, Rat,
And aim to my eyes,
knawing away at my structure.
I give you nothing, Rat,
But you take all that you find.
A dirty scavenger you are, Rat,
Mouthful of blood and bone.

 I hope that was the response you were hoping for. It seemed to me like a Rick poem from the Young Ones. I'm sorry if it wasn't what you were intending, but it made me chuckle, especially the repitition of 'rat'. But this one's much darker, yes.
And the title made me think of the UB40 song 'Rat in the Kitchen' too. :)

This reminds me of the ants that are slowly infesting my kitchen. Filthy thieving bastards.
Though I think I'll take ants over rats :D

Nice, reminds me of the mice we had in our kitchen. They did end up in the trap one by one though - 10 in total :eek2: That is, when we changed the cheese for peanut butter...
No idea what would work on rats. I wouldn't lay easily in my bed when I knew such a rat at work in the kitchen  Those animals are big... And when they're hungry enough, they can eat humans! The sentence "mouthful of blood and bone" almost make me throw up a bit, something in my mouth felt fuzzy! :brickwall: I guess the imaginary worked pretty well there ;)
And yes, UB40 indeed :)
Thank you for sharing,
Sapphire
BTW, I like the word verminous :D Can not recall I stumbled upon it before, it has got a certain ring...

That last line
Mouthful of blood and bone.
Really nails the poem down, by seeming to suggest the perverse temptation to eat the rat that threatens to eat you!

I liked Sophia's response above. Many of us gals have found rats in our kitchens --- but they usually are the two-legged species.

Holy ew. Eeewww. What an image - and to think that I consider some rats to be cute! ... o_O But in response to Sophia and Aunt's posts... they may APPEAR to be cute, and then... they carry the black plague.
Kev, do you need me to ship you up a few boxes of buckshot? That should be more than adequate to cure those damn rats.

won't that take out all the plates, bowls and glasses too? :)
Oh, Silas! Whatever do you need all that garbage for? ;) Men eat right off the grill.

Does anyone get that this poem has a double meaning for a rat AND a human being?
Yes I wrote it somewhat rediculously, but still...

A ha! Thank you sophia... And aunt now that I look again.
I rephrase the question: Did anyone ELSE get that?

Umm no, actually. I took the rat at face value. I guess I had Robbie Burns' 'Ode to a Field Mouse' in my head when you started.
I remember once I had to mercy kill a rat, after the poison didn't do it in. It wasn't well though, and so didn't move very fast.

I guess I didnt make that too obvious. Thank you for reading Silas!
Today I had to kill two mice. I had a trash can in the back of one of the flat beds, I went to throw it away and there were two mice just sittin on top of the trash starin at me. They dig holes in the greenhouse and eat food and such so we get rid of um...
But why is it that I hesitate to kill a mouse, but I can turn around and kill an elk and feel nothing?
Hmmmm.....

Yep! My comment was in response to Sophia's and Aunt's. xD
Kevin, you seriously underestimate my (lack of) ability to analyze poems. Unless it's that typical analytical bull**** I learned from you.
Besides that point, buckshot will take care of any kind of rat you will ever encounter (lest it be a bulletproof rat, in which case D-con is your best bet.)

Well, I will admit that on first reading it I didn't think of the two-legged kind, although I loved the last line. I could just see a rat, pausing on a trash heap, his beady red eyes looking up at you, his mouth full of...something.
It also makes me think of James Cagney, for some reason.

Nice!
I passed this on to some friends of mine who were dreadfully proud of the fact that they had vermin in their student-digs (they christened it Rodney) - they approved!
