Emile Zola - Les Rougon-Macquart

I didn't see an Emile Zola thread, so I will post this here. I want to read the entire Les Rougon-Macquart collection. However, I do not read and/or speak French.

The 4th novel in the series is 'La Conquete De Plassans', and I cannot seem to find an English translation. Does anyone know where I could obtain a copy? Am I just looking in the wrong place?

If there is one, check the forum, though my suspicion is that it is probably a Vizetelly translation, if it exists, and those are all mediocre, and "toned down", though unabridged.

Hi Mariamosis. I'm trying to buy all of this series to read too, and was very annoyed that I couldn't get all of them in the same edition. However, I think if you trawl through Amazon, you will probably find an edition. I wanted to read them all in order, but I gave up on that when I had trouble finding them, so I'm going for the more well-known ones first. There is definitely a Vizetelly translation.

Mariamosis, La Conquete de Plassans means The conquest of Plassans, which refers to the fictitious French town where the fortunes of Rougon-Maquart family turn on the political machinations in France during the Second Empire of Napoleon the third. I have only read Zola in French and therefore can't recommend a good translation, but don't let that deter you, French politics in Zola's hands are absolutely fascinating in everyday human terms and the ending to that particular novel is stunning.

Just so you know, the Vizetelly translations are intensely modified in terms of language, and "toned down", in the sense that they were made more acceptable to the tastes of late Victorian England.

I read 'Germinal' translated by Roger Pearson and 'The Drinking Den' (L'Assommoir) translated by Robin Buss.

I am like you, Wessex, I want to read the entire series. Although I was having trouble finding them and frustrated that I couldn't find one universal publisher.

However, since all of the help from everyone I have found every book in English.

I started with book #13 and then went to book #7, therefore I gave up on the idea of reading them in order.
