Somewhere I said, once, that LitNet was somewhat like a labirynth ...
Well, since I began "playing" with my profile, I began to feel like Narcissus! Very dangerous!: I loved my new profile! Sometimes I come in only to keep looking at myself ...
(I should open a group on mythology, but it isn't the time yet ... So, I'll write threads on it, for now. Possibly, in the future, up there, in the "religious texts" threads ..).
How do you guys like mythology?

I think there are some great stories in mythology - the world would not be the same without it :D The relations between the gods are often messed up though, with all the love between sister/brother and such...

Norse mythology is my career, Judeo-Christian mythology is my hobby - do set something up!

Wait, Norse mythology isn't real? Then where does thunder come from?! You're doublecrossing all my nordic roots here...

I love Greek mythology... And I like the way that the Gods interact... they're far from perfect and they succumb to temptation, lust, vanity, vengeance, etc. It would explain this world a lot more if we actually had those types of God's around us...
but anyway, I'd love to discuss any mythology and learn about all kinds of different myths...

greek mythology thought me something that i believe is important. Reciprocation. I try to use it in my day to day life as i find it important. If someone helps you, you should help them equally. regardless of who they are.

That's a good way to live life... Something to strive toward. However, does reciprocity also imply that if someone wrongs us that we should wrong them back? Does this mean that revenge is also okay? An eye for an eye?
I think reciprocity is only good when dealing with positive actions. But I also believe that one shouldn't wait to have someone help them before deciding to help a person... I strive to help those that do not even help me. We must love those that do not love us, though that can be difficult at times.

One of the things I love the most in the movie "Troy" is its "dismythologization", so as to say a long word ... (argh! .. looks like German!)
It'd be impossible to make a 100% humanized version of the _Odyssey_ and of the _AEneid_. These two books are full not only of gods, but of mythic figures and situations. More than the _Illiad_, which has the main theme the anger of the fighters (Achilles, mainly and first of all, which "the muse sings" or is called to sing).
"Troy" is a brilliant concept, as an adaptation of the _Illiad_, to show us the difference between the _Illiad_ and the _Odyssey_.

I love to see some comparisons between Greek, German and Hebrew* myths; for instance: 1. the fathers of the Greeks were gods (Cronos, Zeus, Apollos); the fathers of the Germans were gods (Odhin, Thor); the fathers of the Hebrews were human beings (Abraham, Izaaq and Jacob); 2. the Greeks had a city in the clouds (the Olympos); the Germans had a city in the clouds (Asgaard); the Hebrews tried to make a city reach the clouds, but were unsuccessful (Babel).
There's also an interesting paralel, in the Hebrew patriarchs, the tale of Noah, in the Mesopotamian myths, which is in the tale of Gilgamesh: Utnapishtim survived a great flood. The Assyrian (?) gods made him immortal, because of the succeeded mission. Noah survived a flood, and was a mortal man.
*The patriarchs first book, usually called in Greek "Genesis" is clearly a non eyewitnessed writing, so, could be compared to a mythology, not only in its narrative as well as in the way it's told.

No its just the good things. But in saying that, if i do something nice for someone, i dont generally expect them to do something for me in return. I'm happy with helping. If someone does something for me, well then i will do something for them. Ancient law of reciprocation. There is a very famous fable/ story about Zeus being turned away from the homes of the wealthy and taken in by a poor family for the night.
My favourite mythology is of course celtic mythology. I just love it.

mythology.... mythos+ logos. something like a fairytale, but based on real events. a spoken tradition, a blending of history and myth(tale). i really like mythology. it is also really didactic. but really, the way greek history and mythology is....i cannot find an adequate word.....i mean...it is so pathetic the way they present it in films.....really..... awful. especially when it comes to historical events....because when talking about mythology, then, yes, you can change the story more or less-but never the basics. but when we talk about history..... and especially some productions are really shameful....the majority of greeks becomes frustrated.... it is really bad to have foreigners show the events that occurred in your own nation or belong to your heritage in a way that is far from reality. like some kind of abusion. anyway....artists do not understand how bad taste their creations may be.
i know much about greek mythology, but i also like egyptian mythology a lot, although i find it a bit difficult to remember. especially when it blends with history and so many names of kings.... but what i find especially interesting in mythology is the religious part of it. i like learning about polytheism and legends, supernatural forces in mythology....
it is certainly a great creation of mankind. and it is more fun than actual history!
