A pound on the door forced two eyes up. “Time to head out!” a voice came from the other side of the metal door. A few more pounds then the sound faded. Silence followed, an odd feeling to the man sitting on the bed inside the dark room. He let out a long drawn sigh, almost of relief, even though there was no reason for this. His head raised slowly, his arms placing a large white plate-like helmet onto his head. The black tinted visor flickered to life on the inside. The Renement helmet was standard issue to any military personnel, yet the one worn by this man denoted a high ranking officer. A large green stripe that went from the top of the visor that wrapped around the top of his head and ended at his neck commanded respect. His eyes fell onto his uniform, a black mesh like under suit, made of a composite fiber, and his large white plate-like armor that covered it.

“Scout!” a voice came from the screen that was projected inside the man’s helmet. Scout’s eyes fixed on the screen that came to life inside of his helmet.

“What do you need recruit?” Scout asked the man that had appeared on his screen.

“It’s time to head out. The ship will be launched in a matter of hours, and we need all the personnel on board as soon as possible.” The screen inside the helmet died, revealing the dark room once again. Scout slowly stood up, picking up his side arm and rifle.

The steps to the door were slow, and longing. Scout had a stone cold look under his helmet, just like always. His hand outstretched to a sensor next to the door, a beep accompanied the opening of the metal door. Two steps led Scout into a well lit hallway, his comrades all walking one way; he joined the ranks following them to a large room for a briefing.

The screen inside his helmet flicked to life again, revealing the General. Scout examined the man, his white suit and slicked back hair didn’t seem military at all. “Men, as you all know the population of Anthos has become too dense to sustain.” The general started pausing for a moment before he began again, “You have been stationed on the ship named Vagabond, of the Renement planets. It is your duty to protect the welfare of all peoples on board.” The General paused again clearing his throat this time. “The journey will take two hundred of our years, so everyone on board will be put into stasis until arrival. It will be the duty of all people on board to populate the selected galaxies. Three ships will be sent to different galaxies. Each ship will contain one million people, civilians, dignitaries, and military officers.”

Scout looked around at the few hundred military personnel that filled the room he was in. “The ship departs in a matter of hours, and once breaking atmosphere you will need to be put into stasis to survive the trip. You will be revived upon arrival. Good luck; you carry the hopes and dreams of Anthos with you.” The screen died, and the picture of the General faded from view.

“Let’s move out!” A voice came from the front, and the mob of military units started moving. A short walk later Scout arrived at a doorway. About the doorway was an LED sign that read ‘Vagabond Lower Entrance’.
Scout stepped through the door to come face to face with a small girl wearing large goggles pointing to the left. “This way! This way! Find an open pod and stick with it!” a large voice squeaked out of the small girl. Following the directions Scout made his way to a cylindrical pod that was barely a shoulders width wide.

He stood outside of the pod for a moment waiting for further instructions. A loud voice emanated from the cylindrical pod that Scout now stood by. “Please step into the stasis chamber.” Scout turned around to face the chamber, and slowly squeezed into it. “Please strap yourself in with the harness.” the voice commanded Scout again. He did so placing the straps around himself and securing them tightly. “Please wait for further instruction.” The voice finished dying away only to leave a bustle of activity outside of Scout’s stasis chamber.

The bustle of activity eventually died down, an hour or so passed with silence as ship personnel went and checked every stasis chamber to make sure all occupants were accounted for. “Please keep your hands inside the stasis chamber,” the voice came again. A glass screen slid down from the top of the pod covering the stasis chamber opening. An image of a man appeared on the screen.

“We are preparing for launch.” The man said. “This is a monumental day for all the planets of Anthos! Once we breach the atmosphere the stasis will automatically commence. It will be just like a short sleep until we reach the destination galaxy. Thanks for flying air Vagabond!” The man ended on an almost humorous note. The screen died away revealing the glass again.

A series of beeps followed the message, and a low rumbling began below Scout’s feet. The rumble became a roar, and the ship jarred violently as it became airborne. Minutes later the rumbling started and a voice came from the back of Scout’s stasis chamber, “Preparing for stasis.”

Scout looked up and saw a thin mist being injected into the pod, his eye lids grew heavy. Blackness enveloped his mind and then nothingness. A vast nothingness that expanded forever.

The ship drifted into space, a lonely space. Into an area of absence, no sound, no light- just a lone ship on its way to inhabit a new galaxy.
