How many times have you changed your political party?
Nice to see you round these parts. I never had any official parties, but I've changed quite a bit.
1. Probably would have voted NDP (far-left, by my standards (Euros may disagree), Canadian party) if I were of-age when I was between 13-17 or so. Most of my political consciousness was defined by the U.S.A though, and I thought Republicans and Bush were stupid/evil (I still mostly think this).
2. Self-identified as a Libertarian in 2012 for sure; probably would have voted Conservative around this point but never did (voting is totally pointless in Banff because the riding is 80+% conservative and will never change).
3. Nowadays I wouldn't vote for any party in Canada, but I probably lean Con if you put a gun to my head. Would illegally vote for UKIP, however.

Eight to ten (I used to play hockey). The only funny one took place when I was about ten. I was swimming in Lake Michigan (I grew up in the Chicago area). I came up quickly from underwater; the top of my head hit my brother's chin and split wide open. I emerged from the water with blood streaming down my face, yelling, "Shark! Get out of the water! Shark!" Three or four stitches.

Ecurb

Never, although I've run from them many times (for minor indiscretions, both in terms of their sinfulness and my age). As kids we used to climb onto the roofs of public buildings, and when the police showed up flee into the night. I also streaked a police station the night before graduating from college. (edited to add) Actually, I've called the police a couple of times (I have just remembered) to report stolen bicycles.

What was the last movie you saw at a Drive-In ?... or if none in a movie theater ?

I think tailor you got "how many" mixed up with "ask a question to the person below?"
I have a new homeless cat I just lured in the house.
the area I grew up in, and now live in, used to have three drive-in movies theaters. now there is only one. i cant remember the last one i saw at them, but i do remembering seeing the remake of the thing with kurt Russell somewhere---maybe it was here, or maybe it was where i went to college in central ny. boy memories are funny things!
have not been to a movie theater since 2005 or 2006. it was either the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe which i think is magnificent, or revenge of the sith which i thought was terrible, but upon giving it further chances upgraded to tolerable. George lucas cannot write dialog, hayden Christiansen is wooden, he and natalie portman had no chemistry, and Samuel L Jackson was probably miscast as a jedi master.

How many power outages have you had within the last year ?

01-04-2023, 10:04 PM
similar things happen to me too. sometimes its even worse when im replying to multiple messages to different people and I send a message meant for one person to another! ack!
I have a funny drive-in movie memory. my freshman year in college I got a ride to where a good friend of mine was going to school. on a lark I said "lets hitchhike to x place to see so and so" (who oddly enough we were close friends with). we got there, she was gone for the weekend, we were wondering what to do with ourselves and we found out that dawn of the dead was playing at a drive-in theater not far from campus. I don't remember exactly how we go to the theater but not having a vehicle, we had to hitchhike our way inside.
its hard to calculate but I have mayyyyyyyyybe close to a year and a half to two yrs if I have to eek it out.
I have a memory of at least one, maybe two. generally theyre not long ones, a few hours to an occasional overnight. the extra challenge for me when that happens is no running water.

two libraries, mayyyyyybe three. maybeeeeeeeeee four. one about 4 miles away in the village of the town where I live, and another right at the edge of your 10 mile radius in the city I grew up in. there is 3rd heading east in a very small village that is probably 10ish miles, and the 4th in another village heading north. now that im thinking about it, there might be a 5th about 10ish miles away heading south just over the Pennsylvania border.
the one north of here has book sales where on the last day they would have a bag sale for 2 dollars. they have since raised their prices. I used to have an "in" with the woman who ran the sale, and after it was over, I would get all the leftover books they weren't keeping, for free.
I visit the one in the village relatively frequently. the high speed internet is nice and I also get a lot of movies on dvd, some from them, most from interlibrary loan. the county I live in and the county directly to the west, has all their libraries tied in together and a couple of drivers that make trips two days a week to move requested materials from one to the other.
I was at the city library recently and took out a book there---probably the first one since I was ten years old.

zero coins in my pocket. I faithfully deposit them in an antique jug I have sitting nearby. when its full I hope to donate half somewhere, and use the rest for something else I don't know what yet. I do however keep one spare quarter out, in my car, in order to use the grocery carts at aldi.

England... I still have family somewhere in the Twickenham - London general area; I haven't any contacts though my Sister does and she's going either this year or next on the way to visit my Brother's villa in Italy... I think she has to pay the renewal fee for my Grandfather's grave. My Mother talked of great gardens she frequented. Supposedly I'm remotely related to the Spencers... would like to do some family history while there and also check out where my maternal Grandfather retired, somewhere on the (I assume East) coast seaside.
France... I studied French 2nd, 6th-9th grades (German 10th-12th), and developed an appreciation of the art scene in Paris... museums, cafes, etc.
Pay for grocery carts ?????? I have a jar that tallies my coins after they come out of my pockets which is rare; though my Son-in-law scans every coin anyone ever gets first for rare coins.
What thread is this ? Oh, how many...

hunting up family ties sounds fun.
of course there is the louvre, but if I can encourage you, make sure to hit up the rodin museum.
if youre liking gardens, you probably know about Kensington gardens, and then in france, Versailles is worth hitting up, not right in paris, but close enough.
and don't forget to hit up the sherlock holmes museum at 221B baker st!
if you can time your visit to france to coincide with catching a stage of the tour de france, its awesome.
yes, aldi locks their carts, they cost 25 cents to unlock and use, and if you bring it back to the store and lock them back up, you get your 25 cents back. that arrangement stops people from leaving cars all over the lot and the store having to pay people, no matter where they get left, from having to retrieve them.
however, im convinced a homeless person could make at least 5 bucks a day from all the carts that STILL don't get returned, or locked up once they do.
no red bricks in my home, nor any bricks. although my house is red.

"how many hours in a good night's sleep?" I've heard from studies that 7-8 hours of sleep is ideal for my age group (pre-sputnik). The sleep data from my smart watch is laughable: Never any REM and my sleep score is 49 or lower than 86% of all users, and I feel it. Mostly naps now with rarely up to 5 1/2 hours sleep in bed. I do fall asleep quickly in bed though because I'm usually sleep deprived and I boor myself from wakefulness with an ongoing sci-fi drama serial that I make up... stealing scenes from all the sci-fi and fantasy I've ever read and watched of course... the main protagonist is currently several billion years old and gets regular warnings to stop time travelling, which he can now do without any conveyance, and once, in the earlier years of this ridiculous serial, he separated 2- galaxies from colliding !

I have a distinct memory of going bowling on an army base in germany in 1985, but I know I have bowled at least once since, I just don't remember where or when. id guesstimate (which the site actually recognizes as a legitimate word, how about that?) somewhere between 8-20ish years.
in the city I grew up in there used to be two very active alleys. my parents belonged to a couples league and tons of other people belonged to that and other leagues as well. one of my fond childhood memories comes from that---the couples league was Friday night. my parents would come home from a fish fry dinner at a local bar, bring me a bag of taco doritos and a can of hi-c or Hawaiian punch and id stay home and watch the brady bunch, the partridge family, the odd couple, room 222 and love American style. in later years a show called Kolchak: the night stalker was on. my parents would come home and my dad would get mad because id have every light in the house on.
now there is only one alley nearby in a struggle establishment, and to my knowledge, no leagues. the other thing that's gone the way of the dinosaur where I live is church and bar league softball (slow pitch and fast pitch respectively), and an outdoor volleyball league.

three in general, of which there are multiple choices. one winter outside hat (that i also wear inside when its cold outside), one winter sleeping hat type thing, and an occasional summer cap depending on the weather.

I never found that to be the tongue twister its supposed to be, that is, ive always been able to say it really fast without mucking it up.
the old standby "toy boat" is a good one. and when I was a kid I "invented" "block box." try those three times fast.

Oz - I've read Baum's stories over and over as late as a year or two ago. There are many that I would like to see produced in the same vein.
Block box is kind'a easy... reminds me of the SNL goreismicomical "Lock Box".
re: "chuck?" - perhaps karate chopping rounds into split wood and kindling à la Chuck Norris ? Splitting wood and kindling is very important in my neck of the woods.
Ducks - Nary a one recently... used to be a number of ducks (dozen+?) in the duck pond 1-mile up the road... but the owners, dear friends of mine, passed away... we took one of our grandsons there and had a picnic once when he was younger, and my father-in-law donated two rare white miniature ducks to them once that unfortunately disappeared after a short time. The pond is just on the side of our road and has a bridge that traverses it whereupon a large billy goat used to take naps. Mostly Canada Geese here nowadays, even in our two small ponds, though I do have a vague recollection of a duck or two, as well as turtles, in them years ago for a short time. Love to hear the Canada Geese trumpeting in flight throughout the day.

makes you wonder, since wood chucks don't "chuck wood" where on earth the name came from?
three kinds of wild ducks---mallards frequently in my pond, and sometimes on the nearby creeks and rivers. mergansers rarely on my pond, but more frequently in the creeks and rivers. and the oddly named black duck (because they aren't black!) on the nearby lake.
and then probably 3-4 different kinds of domestic ducks that people keep for their eggs.
so 6-7.

taylor:"Mmm... love linguiça... Linguiça and eggs is a real breakfast treat"
Looked at the pizza thread and was amazed at the different pizzas US produces. And the names are partly the same as ours but they designate very different dishes. Brazilian pizzas don´t differentiate crusts: simple fast food shops have only one type of crust, elegant pizza shops offer thin, medium and thick crusts and borders with or without cheese fillings, and that is that. None of your square pizzas which look much more like a cake.
No, the difference is in the toppings and their variety of it.Have a look here guys:https://caminhoslanguages.com/blog/brazilian-pizza/
Note: Pizza Calabreza would be the Calabrian pizza. Though taylor´s link doesn´t give the details of the toppings our Calabreza looks like the pizza on the photo of the Calabrian. Mostly Linguiça calabreza, a kind of sausage, with or without onions, with or without cheese.
bounty: "ack danik, canned fruit on pizza! although I do love pineapple---I wonder what other fruit might work."
The tread above forgot to mention "Pizza à Califórnia" among the dessert pizzas. Califonian pizzas with Pepperoni- No never, jamais!
Actually I think the topping originated not as a pizza topping, but as an usual Christmas and New Year favorite garnishing for the Christmas turkey or the Christmas duck: The most usual canned fruit employed are canned peaches, figs and pineapples and fresh cherries. The cheese is added only in the pizza topping.

Prefer no fruit on my pizza... tried pineapple for a while, but I'm over it.

2-JHS: San Mateo/Stockton, CA
1-HS: Newark, CA
1-Uni: Hayward, CA
1-JC: Saratoga, CA (1-day/1-class)... I usually forget this one (lol)
1-Tech: Santa Clara, CA
How many times has your power gone out in the last year ? (can't keep track here... too many times :( )

Thanks, bounty@!:"I think you can add cheese to any fruit and have it be a good combination---I see though the "fruit pizza" doesn't seem to have tomato sauce. that would have been the weird disqualifying factor. cheese sounds okay with bananas. tomato sauce and bananas though, bleech! " The fruit on the pizza are either combined with mozzarella or, more usually, with a milder more creamy sort of cheese called "catupiry" after it´s trade mark. I don´t recollect it having tomato sauce. The dessert pizzas don´t.
"oh gee---that's almost impossible to answer. when you play sports in school, you go to oodles of different schools to play. unless you mean something else by "visit" danik?" I used the wrong verb. I mean: to how many schools did you go?
@tailor: I wonder if I remember my schools as well as you do:
1Preschool-Assis-SP
3 elementary schools, I think all in SP
3 secondary schools RJ (Rio de Janeiro
Universidade de São Paulo- grad and after.
I think it is more than a year ago that power has gone out.
How many music videos/cds/streaming and which did you watch/hear in the last days?

hmm, thanks to my way too expensive but otherwise new super fast internet, maybe 8-9?
a couple inspired by tailor's "smithereens" post, a couple old ones from the 2017 season of "the voice" (chloe kohanski), a few by garbage performing im only happy when it rains (my favorite is the "duet" with Chrissy hynde) and a re-run of (I had shared this with tailor before) heart performing stairway to heaven at the kennedy center honors from 2012.
an oldie but a goodie, how many pages left in the book youre presently reading?

im delayed in the responding tailor so im guessing maybe you are finished with your last 42 pages.
yes, when she steals the motorcycle and heads off in search of her memories.
hmmm, within the last 20ish I think. I had a nifty three-pronged LED jobbie in my garage, and I dropped it, seemingly breaking it, so I had to put in a new old fashioned bulb.
remember the disaster that was those curlie-q bulbs? more expensive, less light, toxic components, etc.
how many teaspoons of sugar in your coffee or tea?

Used to be 3. Now 0 because I have to avoid sugar. So no coffee or tea any more.
How many books do you read in a month (aproximately)?

re: books - although I'm an avid and constant reader I average less than 1-book/month.
42 is nod to Douglas Adams... https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/for-math-fans-a-hitchhikers-guide-to-the-number-42/
re: sugar - doesn't go well in peppermint tea and I haven't had coffee in 18+ years, so... 0.
How many trips to the hardware store in the last month ?
bounty

good timing on that one tailor. I own property and we spent the day yesterday (and will be part of today) working on a leak. two trips to the local hardware store, one to home depot, and three to our basement supply storage area.
so either 3 or 6 depending on how you reckon.
this doesn't technically count, but we just put a new roof on a house we own and that necessitated a half dozen visits to lumber supply stores.
danik, I use flavored water to sweeten my tea. it works really well.
I remember "42" from a big bang theory episode where raj and howard are trying to figure out why Sheldon has the number 37 (if I remember rightly) written on a white board in a basement supply room.
how many movies on your "I wanna see this" list?
tailor STATELY

Yeah, I've been told it isn't a project, or a project done right, unless you've been to the hardware store at least 3-times.
Sheldon's #37 was a hoot :)
Movies ? Just 2 and I'll prolly have to wait: "everywhere, somewhere, and something"? and Oppenheimer.
How many of your neighbors have kitschy Pink Flamingoes in their yard ?
Danik 2016
09-19-2023, 10:02 PM
Lol!
0 as everybody lives in skyscrapers without gardens or yards. Sometimes there are garages instead. So no place for kitchy flamingos.
I don't know if we have flavored water here. Anyway thanks for the suggestion.
How many cups of water do you drink per day?

I haven't peeked at this yet tailor, but I plan to:
https://outdoordiscoverer.com/25-classic-movies-that-should-be-on-everyones-bucket-list/
i liked the early BBT episodes (all in re-runs) but I don't like the later ones really. same with young Sheldon.
danik im sure you do---little packets of artificially sweetened crystals that you drop in the water. all the grocery stores and all the "dollar" type stores here have them and theres dozens of flavors. when will you be going food shopping next?
i'll keep my eyes peeled for pink flamingoes as I ride around.
I don't drink plain water at home---I have a well and the water tastes like minerals but when I add the aforementioned flavoring, I drink probably at least 3-4 cups a day. a little more if im doing the 20ish mile roundtrip bike ride into the nearby city.
if tailor's dreaded zombie apocalypse happened tomorrow, how many weeks worth of food do you have in your house so that you don't have to venture out and get eaten?
Danik 2016
09-23-2023, 10:31 PM
Very little bounty . I often buy ready food like rice, potatoes and meat and mix fresh vegetables into the rice or whatever
. This food usually lasts for one or two days. During pandemics I had more food at home.
With the present heat, I think I drink about 6 cups of water a day.

so tailor, if the zombie apocalypse comes, and the mail service is still operating, we'll have to send danik some food.
I just stopped my DISH-tv service, so no more news on the telly. a teeny bit of radio when im in the garage (it comes on with the lights). everything else is online. I regularly go to a place where there are 4-5 sister sites of news and commentary, so I don't know if that counts as 1, or 4-5!
my "home page" is msn, but that's a conglomeration of many different sites for a variety of news. and since ive got high speed internet now, I was able to resurrect my "myyahoo" page, which also has modules from a variety of places covering different aspects of life.
one might say 4, one being my sister sites, one being msn, one being yahoo, and one being the radio but the middle two have a myriad of iterations. so maybe the answer is 4 to many dozens.
danik, since you are upside down below the equator, this one might be just for tailor---how many weeks until you might get your first snowfall?
Danik 2016

Hi, bounty
I hope you hadn't to stop your telly news because of the high speed internet.
My internet pages are similar as yours they have several sources, in Portuguese they are called portals. I have got portal U O L, MSN and CBN Brazil and also Deut hug ýý makesamong others, but many sites are behind paywalls. That makes four.
At 35 grades Celsius I pass the snow question on to tailor.

re: food - ok

How many ice cubes in your fridge (estimate) ?

no more telly danik---the internet is expensive, the actual physical tv was starting to breakdown, and I found a few different websites that have free tv and movies. i'll miss some things, but gain others. the end result of all the recent additions and subtractions of services is that i'll be spending about 700-800 dollars less per year.
we usually get some snowflakes in late October, but it rarely stays on the ground.
no ice cubes but I have two of those little plastic things with frozen water inside them that work like ice cubes. I also have, though I don't have them in my freezer, plastic cups that have an inner and outter layer with water in between them that can be frozen. pretty nifty.
in your usual travels---whats the most iterations of any one type of commercial enterprise? for instance, my area has 3 dollar general stores I frequently pass by (or visit). we're about to get a 3rd tim Horton's.
