This is something I thought I would experiment with, and since sonnets have traditionally been about love, I decided to start with that. The first one is Shakespearean (although a few lines not in Iambic Pentameter), and the other is Petrarchan.
Dearest Claire-my living heart beats for thee
always, my love with your love and our love
together release your soul flying free
into the endless sky and blue above.
My memory serves that fateful day,
picture a scarlet red blush on your face-
when you, the fairest of all wish'd to say:
"beside you I forever take my place"
Thus we promised to unite for this life
and my heart and your heart again drew near
you, Claire, my glorious aesthetic wife
an eternally caring, lovely dear!
Yea, will I now call this star by your name
and at last, the gods shall sing to your fame.
There are places where men learn not the ways of war:
sanctuaries of love and brotherhood,
distant lands in which values always stood
as the guideline for all who live. They see
how there is little sense in the want for more.
I know those people, the peaceful and queer
and I know that is the way it is here.
But the best of it all is you with me-
my princess who do now prove the darkness can retreat,
know that i'll never be your perfect man
but i'm happy to be your knight tonight,
perhaps one your soul is forever wont to meet.
My soul holdeth not a candle to your light
for that light is the sun in this land.
