Do you ever get that urge? You know you want to say something, but you know it'll do no good? What do you do? Post anyway? Or hold your tongue?

I had this feeling a few minutes ago. I chose to hold my tongue, as I have done many times and sometimes should have done. Initially this makes me feel aggravated yet after a while that feeling fades and I accept my decision.

So what do you do?

Sometimes I post, but I usually regret it. Most of the time I type up a huge rant and then delete it. I’m curious what you held your tongue over :)

I often get this in real life. Not so much because I disagree with people, but because I can be very cheeky and like to tease people I don't like. Seeing as I also like to tease people I like, the ones I don't like often misunderstand my comments. So I've learned to hold my tongue.

Do you ever get that urge?Yep, all the time, and the standard procedure is that I post anyway :D

As far as I am concerned, this is the case not only here, but in general: Over the years, I have written lots of letters to the editor to local and not so local rags, as well as the odd conversation with people elected to public office and others "in charge". In short, I am definitely not renowned for keeping my tongue.

Then, of course, there is the question of how you express your opinion: Screaming blue murder seldom produces any worthwhile results, so I usually try to complicate matters by dragging facts, and when it fits, a bit of humour into the discussion. It works for me...

I get that urge a lot. In real life 99% of the times i speak my mind and become unpleasant (that has gotten me quite the reputation of being austere)..in the internet i hold my tongue most of the times ;)

There are several factors:

1) Who I'm agruing with,
2) What is the arguement
3) How I feel at the moment

and most importantly:

4) How much time I want to spend in the arguement

You know what Taliesin! I don't care about what you just said there anyway, I thought it was without substance and quite pointless! ;) j/k

It's usually one particular subject that I avoid, as it has a tendency to make somewhat reasonable people completely unreasonable. Not always though, but it is always a circular argument and I can't be arsed with it. :)

hahahahaha

good one :)

as for the thread topic, like some of you expressed already, I feel this way a lot as well. I usually hold my words back, mostly because I lack the energy and patience to sit and write out a meticulous response. In real life I tend to speak my mind and get into trouble for it as well.. I can be quite forceful in my language, maybe condescending, and quite passionate, which usually ends up backfiring on me. I really need to learn how to be more diplomatic, especially since I plan on being a diplomat one day...

On the forum, I tend to 'bite my tongue' a lot. When I do let my occasionally ill temper get to me, I end up feeling remorseful, and sending an apology or two. Usually I do quite well at ignoring the thread for a day or two, then coming back to it after I have thought out what to say in a less-rude manner.
In real life, I consider myself very shy and quiet, but I rarely hold back what I want to say, which has gotten me into a bit of trouble from time to time. I speak politely and as inoffensively as possible, but especially when it regards someone or a subject I care about I rarely restrain myself.

Well, I can honestly say that there is something that I have read today that has really irritated me. Mainly because people really shouldn't speak as if everything they say is fact (I will keep the topic that has gotten under my skin today to myself, though - it is best to do so ;)). There have been quite a few things discussed on this site that have gotten me very upset (and those generally are the comments made by people who think they are so open-minded and are really quite the contrary). I just think it is best to keep my mouth shut because I don't care to get worked up over something over the internet.

Now, if this were in "real" life, I tend to speak my mind. I am known to not hold back. I suppose that really isn't a good way to be, but I can't help it.

I think it is easier for me to ignore the comments that I disagree with online because I can always go to a different page/topic. Whereas in real life, I find it harder to just walk away from someone and let them get away with saying what they want to say without getting a chance to say something back.

Arguing on the Internet is like *joke edited due to inappropriate slur*- even if you win, you're still retarded.

My resolution is that if there is something I feel strongly enough about to argue about it, I will first eliminate my biases on the topic and try to argue in a fair, articulate and level headed fashion. Also, I will not comment/discuss/argue about anything I THINK I know about but do not really... if I feel I must, I will do further research on the topic first.

I always am very careful in my speech, when I'm talking face to face with people, so, I don't have difficulties with it.

I do it naturally. I am known as a person who thinks before speaking. (At least, I used to, till very recently. More than one person came to me, in .. what, until a couple of years ago, and said so.)

I was banished from a forum, because I didn't get well along with the moderators, who didn't respect me. I had .. one tough moment in this forum, in which the moderators had to intervene, and they did it quite right (in a way that those in the other forum did not), so I wasn't bad about erasing something I had written myself, thing that, in that case, if I had not, possibly one of them would have done, with authority and rightly.

Yet, as people talk with me, I hear, and agree, when they do it properly. I prefer to get a fight, than not to say what I see, think and judge proper, or wrong.

Yet, seldom do I mess up with people. I'm very much autocritic, and this is why most times I don't bother people. (And, when I "bother" them, they see that it isn't out of hypocrisy, but with previous self thought, and insight.)

I like to make people think. Rather than express my opinions.

I think we speak freely in places we feel comfortable and welcome to do so. For instance, I joined a forum on financial subjects, and I know I won't speak much there, because I don't have much to speak, not as much as to listen.

Here, in LitNet, I speak most in "General Chat", because there's space to it. I'd like that they didn't count the "General Chat" messages. It'd reduce my number of posts from 500 to 5 ... I spoke very little "up there". (Perhaps it'd motivate me to speak more "up there" ... )

(Or not.)

I make part of a playmobil forum, where there's very little room for relationship, and this is something in this forum here that captivated me ... In LitNet we can linger, and simply make friends. It's wonderful!

(I told somewhere that ... in my "Welcome", possibly, that I'd let my name out in time, if I lingered, and if the forum captivated me ... Well, I can say that it has. -- Not that it's difficult to find out who I am by other means, on the contrary, possibly the easiest thing to be done, but it's very different than me saying who I am ...)

(I wouldn't be saying this if I was still .. afraid of people trying to find out my true name ... Cause no, it isn't Tim :D )

(You could call me Tim, though ... Lol.)

I think your question could be rephrased as "why do you speak?" Do you have one or more reasons to write what you write, whenever you write?

Sometimes, I have nothing to say. Sometimes I do. Some threads pull me, some don't. Some areas of the forum attract me more than others.

& There will be more time to talk about Etymology here in LitNet :D ... It doesn't seem to call people's attention. But, well, meanwhile, I'll be with 5 posts all right.

(Now I'm going to read what people wrote about it :) )

Timmy,

I can't really tell now can I? I'll give you all a hint: It was something I very much disagree with. :p

It depends, but, if it makes the world MUUUCH worse, you should say something, all right.

If it can change someone.

You shouldn't say anything if the person you're willing to talk with isn't going to pay attention to you. Then it's useless, and it's pointless doing useless things. ... Or not.

All depends on a lot of things, so, I can't be more specific.

(For instance, it can be (1) something between you and someone that you should say through pm, cause it's personal, and opinion, or you aren't certain about it; (2) something between you and someone that you could say publicly, but it doesn't need to be in a thread, it can be in his profile, as a visitor message; (3) something between you and someone that annoys you so (which seems to be the case), that you should report, even being a moderator (I think you are ...), in case of personal engagement, I'd better ask another moderator to deal with it .. but, then, I was never a moderator :rolleyes~; (4) something in your mind, then you should do as Sprinks does ...)

You see, there are many ways of solving it ... Even editing. I hate editing!, but, sometimes it'll be necessary.

Or keeping the tongue. Sometimes it's necessary as well.

(Sometimes, when I'm in doubt, I get a preview ...)

I feel that way often. So then I go into one of the "What are you thinking now" or "leave an anonymous message" or "vent your anger here" type threads, and vent away

Ha!, these are threads I never visit! haha! I hope noone ever left an anonymous message to me, because I never read it :D Lol!

There are several factors:

1) Who I'm agruing with,
2) What is the arguement
3) How I feel at the moment

and most importantly:

4) How much time I want to spend in the arguement

Now this is very interesting! :)

It de[ends. I'm not too shy. I rather let it out than not. I bet most people have realized that about me. :D

[I][Papaya's quote]

I like that. I probably go through those same criteria myself. I might add a fifth, where I'm at discussing. I try to avoid political discussions here, though it depends on how lit the match is under me. ;)

Yep, Virge, I have realized ...

I avoid political discussions (most) everywhere ... I also avoid religious discussions. This was why I stopped going in the "Religious Texts" area ... It's very little about the texts themselves, and much more about people's opinion, and I was giving a lot of mine, so I decided not to go there anymore.

---

One very important thing is the difference between speaking and writing. These are two different things of letting your words out. When you speak, you are to think about what you're changing directly around you. When you write, you should think about what you are doing in mankind. Writing can remain, you know? ... Writings in Roman walls have remained, while important books haven't. Not everything remains, but writing tends to last longer.

---

I find it funny people to refer to life outside the internet as "real" life, as if what we write, and (inter)act in here weren't real. It's very real, only, it's written. Possibly it's more real than what we live outside. At least, it tends to last longer.

But I understand it as something that we haven't .. thought well yet. Internet has about 10-15 years of worldwide effectual use.

...

Some more thoughts .. to change the world

Timmy~

[I had ended up there, but I still have to say this:

I think there is an important point that needs to be made. I don't think there is a need to refrain from commenting, no matter what the thread. What needs to stop, is the inconstructive and irrelevant responses. I have typed many angry posts, read them through and discover they contribute with nothing.
I really dislike reading the posts that are like personal attacks, the posts that belittle others, or exude an arrogant attitude. It is very easy to type that sort of reply, and it effectively dismisses the previous points.
Wether or not we agree with a post, i think it is a question of responding in a mature manner. So no, I don't feel like there are posts I 'must not comment' too, but there are many times where I think, 'I will not comment'.

Aye, so true. The thing I didn't reply to was such that no matter what you say, it'll always be construed as a personal attack, hence the restraint.

Sometimes I've written something that is extremely arrogant or the type that belittles people and end up destroying it in a huge bonfire of equality. I like to think that on the lit-net, people are more equal than on other forums. That's not a reference to Animal Farm if anyone is wondering, it's just that I have been on a communist forum where Stalin was the boss.

Aye, so true. The thing I didn't reply to was such that no matter what you say, it'll always be construed as a personal attack, hence the restraint.

But what was it? Might your lack of faith be unfounded?

How can you know that for sure?

Arguing on the Internet is like *joke edited due to inappropriate slur*- even if you win, you're still retarded.

Is it bad to be "retarded"?

(it depends on the .. variation of the concept. but, all in all, I think it isn't the best thing to be.)

In reality, I cannot keep my mouth shut, and I always speak my mind (which is more often than not a real trouble, but anyway). Here, well, I used to reply freely, but I realise that it is better to ignore, than to attack, I feel that I would create a vile circle, I'd lose my peace, and I'd degrade myself to a lower level.

I have a folder on my desktop called angry litnet rants it helps control the rage...

Along similar lines: Arguing on the Internet is like mud wrestling with a pig. Sooner or later you realise that the pig enjoys it.

Most of the time I type up a huge rant and then delete it.

Ditto :)
