'Tis the season, or very nearly. :p Summer graduation is almost upon us. Is anybody here about ready to snatch that special diploma, degree or certificate? It's an exciting time but somewhat frightening, because in one day you're transitioning from one life to another. What are you planning to do once you grab the goods and go?
Me, I get my BFA in Illustration come this May. I'm a little terrified because there's so much to get done before then, but at the same time it's a relief knowing that I've only got a few weeks to sweat it out. Being as attached to my home as I am, I doubt I'll head out of town. I think I must be the only kid I know that is determined to stay in Ohio, to heck with the weather.
You? :D

I always felt weird at my graduations, especially the one when I participated in the ceremony before I actually completed my degree, but they were always fun. It's hard not to get caught up in the mood of celebration with everyone smiling and taking pictures and having a good time with their family and friends. I hope you enjoy yours, congrats on the BFA!

I don't think I'd be able to survive in Ohio. Or maybe I'm as attached to my home as you are to yours. :) I wish you the best of luck!

I've never graduated from College. :( But i was part of the College Choir and sang with them at the grads one year. If i'd remained in college and got my Dip and then my degree i'd have a lot more opertunities open to me. Ah well.
Best of luck with the graduation Higley. :)

I'm graduating this year: three more weeks of teaching, two essays and an exam, and then I'm done. I'll have my BA in English Literature, and (God help the world) I'll technically be a professional!

Well, I won't be graduating this year, but I now have the option to skip my last two years in high school and pursue college. :)
Best of luck to you, Higley. ^^
And congratulations to you, Lokasenna!

   All the best to you - and the world can lump it :D.
I'm graduating high school this May, and was chosen to give the senior address at the ceremony. Then hopefully it's off to PHC in the fall.

It's never too late, Niamh. You can always go back to the College and complete your studies or go for something different.
Open University offers many courses that you can fit around your daily life.
You should go for it! :)

I'll be graduating from high school this year!
I only wish I could get excited about it...
graduation smaduation . . . it isn't all it's cracked up to be. I fell asleep at my very own ceremony and had to be woken up when it was time for me to walk across the stage. That's just my skewed opinion of it all. Then again with a class of five hundred something people I didn't know, what did I expect?

High school grad wasn't too exciting, to be sure, mostly because I knew at the time that I was going from one educational institution to another and it wasn't a big deal. This one's different in that it's basically the day that kicks me and tells me to go out, get a real job, pay insurance and make my rent. Unless I go back to school to get a teaching certificate, which I am seriously considering.
Congrats to everyone else about to walk the stage :)

I graduate in about two months from high school, and then it's off to the university to pursue a degree in International Relations. Also planning to go on a study abroad my sophomore year. We'll see.
Congrats, all, on your graduations.

I'm graduating from High School in June. And guess what, I'm not secured in any college. Looks like I'll be reading Shakespeare as a homeless person on the side of the road.
Really, I'm so scared to leave my safe, predictable high school. I mean, I have anxiety and control problems. I probably should of signed up for a college, but now I'm too late for most of them and I don't even know what to do. Doesn't help that my dad refusing to help me. He's such a procrastinator.

I read in a local newspaper that the normal 45% of college grads that go on to work in low paying jobs is rising due to the bad economy, with students 'taking what they can get' and many finding it near impossible to find any work. So much for paying back those hefty student loans, eh?
I advise all recent college grads to stay in school as long as they can. Go on for a Ph.D---Ph.D programs have had to dumb down like grad programs have had to do, as more departments try to justify the need for more money in their annual budgets. Think of the bright side: if you all pursue a Ph.D, by the time you get out in the real world there just might be a real world to return to.

May I ask what a person with a liberal arts PhD degree does unless one teaches college? And those jobs were hard to come by even before the bad economy. Isn't that throwing more wasted time and money after bad? Isn't the real problen that liberal arts degrees don't lead to anything?

As far as liberal arts, it's no surprise that college humanities programs are fast dwindling, and the importance of the classics with them. On the flip side, recent college grads shouldn't have to settle for working in some dead end retail job or for a temp service that keeps the bulk of their wages when they could better spend that time enriching their own minds, even if that means pursuing a worthless degree. In grad school, students get to expand on their undergrad work while others try something completely new. Worst case they get out of grad school in the same position they are now---relegated to working at Wal-mart until something better comes along.
I say it's a better idea for students to go straight to grad school after they finish their undergrad anyway. Working five years in the "real world," which is what so-called experts suggest that college grads do before going on to an advanced degree, normally results in most forgetting how to write a basic research paper and to read critically. Corporate jobs turn human minds into empty cubicles, as do so many other career jobs. Many that settled into cushy careers immediately after college have found themselves on the unemployment line. Or at best, with job security at a job they hate waking up to go to every morning. It's time to break this sick cycle.

Jon, my brother has a PhD in Anthropology and cannot get regular job. He finally decided to go and teach at the American university in Kuwait. He's essentially been in college his whole life and he's over forty.
