First Impressions
With the white nursing uniforms on. Yna rushed to her car to go to school, still feeling excited and nervous.
“Yes its mommy’s first day in collage. Wish mommy good luck!” Yna muttering.
“Oh no, Darn it, Gas is low. Do I still have time? Oh yeah, Still has time to gas up. Great, there’s a station and there’s a ministop. I’ll get some soda.”
“P 500 please. Unleaded po, Manong could you also please put some water, and clean my windows? I just need to buy something. Will be back in a jiffy. Okay?”
Yna just took a can of coke light and hurriedly went back to her car.
Sensing that someone is staring at her. Yna almost dropped the can after realizing who just approached her – Mark.
“Good morning classmate Yna.” Mark beamed with a naughty smile, looking really dashing in his white uniform.
Yna just raised her eyebrows, while shaking.
“Look, I am also my way to school too, mind if I drive your car? Please?” Mark was almost begging.
“How can I say no to someone who gave me free lunch yesterday?” Yna answered
“Alright!!!” Mark threw a punch in the air.
“FOR CHRISSAKE MARK, WILL YOU PLEASE SLOW DOWN? I DON’T WANT TO DIE YET!” Yna shrieked.
“Oh, im so sorry, really I am, I’m just used to…
You know … racing.
“FINE, WHATEVER, JERK.” Yna mumbled.
The two finally reached the campus. Yna still on her toes praying the she will arrives the alive and in one piece.
There was still some 15 minutes before class starts ang those who arrived ahead of them suddenly stopped chatting when they arrived.
“You’re together. Where have you been?” Marianne maliciously asked.
“HELL!” Yna replied angrily.
Cyrus and Joseph arrived as well, still discussing their new PSP games.
A few minutes later, the English professor walked quietly inside the room. Known to be a terror to all students, especially neophytes the teacher collected first their class cards and called for attendance. The class despite fear remained highly spirited and jolly.
“Okay class, well take a 15 minutes break. You may take your snacks or relieve yourselves at the washroom. But I would strongly suggest you read back your notes if you were taking them down because when I return. We’ll have a short quiz, See you all later.”
Half of the class went down to get their food at the canteen. Yna unpacked her sandwiches; she was a bit hungry too.
“Here, have some.” Yna offered a sandwich to Mark who was sitting beside her.
“Thanks, im still full.” Mark replies.
“Yeah right, so tell me why are you biting your fingers? Get one. I won’t charge you for that, even if you almost killed me today!” Yna answered back, now smiling.
Mark was so dumbfounded, couldn’t say a word, but accepted the sandwich.
“How sweet!” Janelle breaking her silence.
“SHUT UP” Both Mark and Yna wanted to say but chose not to.
The second half of the class started and as instructed, they had their quiz. Everyone passes the test. The professor was not as cruel as everyone thought.
Philosophy and Physical Education: Second and last subjects:
“Is our Professor singing a lullaby? My eyes are getting heavy.” Marianne complained.
“Hold on, it’s just a 1 hour and 30 minutes subject. Janelle whispered.
Finally the classes ended and everyone headed straight to the gymnasium for their P.E class. They did some stretching and jogging and other awkward exercises that some found it embarrassing to do the activity. After sweating and warming ups, the instructor called it a day and dismissed the class.
The girls changed clothes at the comfort rooms freshening themselves when Marianne accidentally saw Mark through the mirror waiting for somebody.
“Is Mark courting you Yna?” Marianne asked Yna who was tying her hair up.
“What? We just met him yesterday; nobody falls in love that easily on their first meeting.” Yna defended.
Done, the girls went out to head home. Mark instantly straightened himself and radiantly smiled at them, eyes glued on Yna. They passed by the Registrar first to get the list of materials for their Laboratory class the next day.
Janelle and Marianne waved goodbye sensing that Mark wanted to be left alone with Yna.
“Can I drive your car again Yna? I’ll take you home then ill just take a cab to go back home.” Mark hesitantly asked.
“Thanks Mark, but I’ve had enough joyride with you today. I would love to attend my lab class tomorrow, alive and breathing, if you don’t mind Mr. Villacorta. Yna sarcastically replied.
Mark just smiled although in his heart he wanted to push his luck a bit further.
“Where’s your BMW by the way? Have you returned it to its rightful owner? I bet dad is already looking for it. Yna jokingly said.
“No, that is mine. I can’t use it today because it’s coding.” Mark frowned.
“Can I just ask you one last time to go with me at the bookstore? You have the listed of stuff right? Maybe we can buy them now together.” Mark insisted.
“You don’t give up, do you huh? Alright, Let’s go.” Yna replied, shaking her head.
At the bookstore, Yna bumped to a guy; tall, tan and dimpled. Mark held his stance ready to pounce the poor guy.
“Michael? Hey! Wow, small world. Or should I say short University belt? Hahaha. My God look at you! Still a varsitarian?” Yna excitedly fussed.
The two continued to chat and reminisce about their childhood while Mark almost burned with envy. Finally Michael had to go and kissed Yna in the cheeks and said goodbye. Mark clenched his fist and gritted his teeth.
“Who was that? Is he your boyfriend? Why did he kiss you? Mark questioned Yna.
“What on earth is your problem? He’s my childhood friend. Almost a brother to me! Shucks, Mark, you are far worse that my father’s interrogation! Yna answered, puzzled at Mark’s reaction.
“Can we go home now? Im really tired.” Yna asked
Mark feeling a bit ashamed of his actions sat on the car and did not say a word. He knew he did not make such a very good impression with Yna Martinez.

Chapter 3
Assignment: Sitio Aquino
They say College life is far different from High School. Tertiary education for most of us is a privilege these days, not just our birthright. It means serious business for those who really want to earn their degree.
Still sleepy and feeling sluggish waking up the following day, Yna received a text message from Marianne asking her she’ll ride along to go to school. She lives just a few blocks away from Yna’s ancestral house. Yna acknowledged the message and even asked Marianne to tell Joseph and Janelle to go with them as well, to save gas and their allowance. While waiting, Joseph out of the blue, spoke his mind.
“Is there something we should know about Yna and Mark?” He inquisitively asked.
“Neither would confess anything.” Blurted Marianne.
A few minutes later, Yna arrived still yawning and with uneven cheek tints. She was so tired with their assignments and hardly had sleep that night. The three went inside the car when Yna’s cell phone played its tweety message alert. Joseph and Janelle exchanged naughty looks.
“Who would that be? Yna thought
“I bet you a month’s allowance its Mark.”
Marianne teasingly blurted out
“GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE,
YOU LIGHT UP MY DAY ^__^”
Yna would have lost the bet if she called in.
They reached the school early enough for Yna to fix her cheeks and comb her wet hair. They then proceeded to their Zoology Class. Not a very student-friendly subject.
Cyrus and Mark were already inside the room and when Yna, Joseph and the girls went in, Mark suddenly forgot what he was telling Cyrus.
The class starts at exactly 9:30 AM all of them prepared with the day’s lesson. Their professor required them to use a textbook for reference that they will be using for the whole semester. Before the class ended, the College of Nursing Dean surprised everyone with as special announcement that the school is sending a group of selective students from the class to conduct an environmental research in Ilocos, all expenses will be paid by the College.
Since they were already grouped during their orientation, the Professor suggested to draw the group who will represent the school to be fair to all who wanted to be part of the study. After preparing the groups and a few more instructions from the Dean, the draw started and by sheer twist of fate, Yna’s group was drawn.
“All right then, I will give further details on this study and your kind professor here will see to it that everything is all set and good to go. Good luck to the chosen team.” Dean Fernandez remarked before leaving the class.
The Friendshoppe team stayed after class and discussed further information on their upcoming research. They were all set to leave a month after to go to Sitio Aquino, a small barrio in Ilocos with a population not more that 1,000 residents. News broke out that half of the barrio got seriously ill, majority suffered from Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) with signs of Dehydration and frequent of vomiting and nausea. Greatly affected were children under 10 years old and some adult farmers.
According to reports the Local Government and the Department of Health have already acted on the issue, conducting their own investigations, however the Commissioner on Higher Education also wanted to take part in solving the mystery by getting involved in the study, thus choosing the school to send representatives to conduct the research. Their objective is also to expedite the school mission in providing health care as well as environmental preservation.
“We still have a month to go before we go to Ilocos, do you think that would be enough for us to take up advance classes so we won’t get left behind when we’re there?” Janelle asked feeling a bit worried though excited with their assignment.
“Of course we can attend advance classes. The Dean has arranged for that. Otherwise, I’d rather not join if I will just flunk my subjects for this dangerous adventure out of town.” Yna assured Janelle
“It will be great girls, don’t worry… We’ll have more fresh air, green lush; we’ll see animals, waterfalls… We’ll have so much time to fly around!” Cyrus beamingly said.
Mark as one thing on this mind while concealing a smirk in his face. “A month with Yna… better than any race I’ve ever won.”
