This piece is for read write prompt #71: it's all about the first line (http://readwritepoem.org/2009/03/20/read-write-prompt-72-its-all-about-the-first-line/). It was inspired by a first line from James (http://coyotemercury.com/blog1/). Enjoy!
They Pound my Concrete Face (http://thinkingcities.blogspot.com/2009/03/they-pound-my-concrete-face.html)
The water presses deep
And blue against this dam;
Fluid pulses upon my arch
Like enemies sounding a battle.
March past my concrete face:
A curve, stoic, that betrays not
A hint of the rhythmic war within
Booming like thunder, crashing
Against this steady line they fight:
Each pulse a crest of excitement
Sending fluid coursing through
Vessels, pounding furiously
But they will not break me;
Each trickle through my face
Empowers me: I am a living soul
And I share my strength with the world.
Beyond this face the stresses
Have declared war on my peace:
Relentless surging, unending forces;
I curve the arch of my face away.
