Originally I wanted to spend 2 months on a kibbutz (for those who don't know, an agricultural communal camp in Israel where they give you food/shelter in exchange for your labour) because plenty of relatives on my Mom's side (including my Mom) have been to them and have had great experiences, and I like to travel and work outdoors. But I found out I'm too young to do that, so I'm going to work on writing a novel. I've already written down a plan, which is of course subject to change, but it looks like it'll clock in at around 60,000 words and I'll be self-publishing it when/if I finish it. And of course I'll do whatever I normally do when I don't have school (I'll just call it "fun stuff"). Thought about getting a job but I figure I'll never have another opportunity in my life after this summer when I'll have so much free time at my fingertips, so I may as well use it to do something I've always wanted and want to continue to do: write.

Wow, you guys sure have lots of interesting things to do! As for me, I'd probably be stuck working while taking summer courses in school. Not that I'm complaining, I'm doing it on my own free will, after all. But aside from these, I'll be watching lots of anime, read the books I've bought, and practicing my flute since I haven't practiced for years now. (I've bought lots of books and they're in French, Spanish and German, not that I can read German, though. Just gonna read French and Spanish novels to prepare myself for the coming semester and hopefully, be used to reading foreign texts.)

Ah, don't feel so bad. When I is school I had to work summers myself, and i usually squeezed in a summer course. My summers were usually spen learning something on my own as well. Yuo'll be better for it in the long run. Young people today seem to have a lot more money than when I went to school. ;)

Yeah, i've read a report saying that the youth of today comprises the largest part in the workforce and that they have a relatively higher spending power as compared to the youth of yesteryears. But it's not like I'm rich or something, just average and I think it's enough to live a simple life. (Though I really wanna travel all around the world...)

I don't know where you're located, Madhuri (name sounds Indian, but I don't know), but summer is the absolutely BEST season in most of the US, Canada, and Europe. Where I live, we spend the winter just waiting for summer. :) It's beautiful here in the summer. It's hot, but beautiful. :) What I can't understand are the people who wait all winter for the arrival of summer and hot weather, then turn on the air-conditioning to cool off!

I'm going to be outside as much of the summer as possible, enjoying the sun and heat.

Yeah, I worry about doing that myself by accident. They are really strict about the pledge and even half "language" police around campus to catch you if you speak English.

That's interesting.:) Are you going to go to China later on?

I remember when I was teaching in Shanghai some of my students (of the English language) would keep one day a week at their dormitory where they would just speak English, and their English was excellent.

roadtrip across the states.
This was my plan this summer. I was going to be taking this major road trip, but I am highly doubtful of it now. :(

So I guess I really won't be doing anything at all, really. Except look for a job. But I do that all the time, every season. So I guess that doesn't count. :) No, I really don't have anything planned unless I can make that road trip.

I might change my plans, and go to work on the ranch I used to ride at when I was a kid. Camp out in the woods, ride all day, take tourists on trail rides, and help out with the cattle... so instead of doing that with my family in exchange for food and clothes, I'll do it for MONEY! Woop!

I've heard wonderful things from friends who have taught English in China. There really is nothing better for learning a language than immersion like that.
How long were you in Shanghai for? Do you speak Chinese?

Yeah, I know I should. Road trips are always worth it in the end. Money is a major problem right now, but so is time. That may be more of an issue than money. I don't know if I will have the time to go. We'll see, though. There still are a few months before summer and a few more before the end of the season. :)
