Father Ted!

Also The Vicar of Dibley, Time Team, Neighbours and generally costume dramas & historical programs/documentaries. I also really miss Strange but True, although that finished when I was a child :( I do love comedies, I love to laugh. Classic comedies are the best [such as Are you being served? And Carry On's] because they're subtly innuendous, not abhorrantly crude like many modern comedies.

I watch very, very little television (particularly only movies), but frequently watch Jeopardy, and, now and then, a few documentaries on 'The Discovery Channel,' 'The Learning Channel,' or 'The History Channel.'
I suppose I cannot understand many of the 'reality' television shows (often far from 'reality'), sitcoms, and talk shows, but understand others' tastes. ;)

I actually don't really watch TV.I would not find the time.I rarely watch anything most nights, but, if I do it's usually a documentary, a historical ABC drama, a foreign language film on SBS or the science show Catalyst and The Movie Show, which has serious reviews;many from art house and unusual independent documentary films from overseas.Hypothetically:If I had choose between watching some TV show I'm not really interested in or read another book I have to choose the book everytime. There is so many I've still yet to get through in my spare reading time I just don't have any spare time to watch shows that are either quite dull and not stimulating enough or just repeats.I don't have the spare time to watch TV all night as I'm usually so busy with other things. But there was a few good documentaries and historical shows I've seen.Did anyone see the ABC series doco-drama about women writers(though they featured one male-Robert Louis Stevenson) in the nineteenth century?I loved the one about Mary Shelley and also George Eliot. One week they had this long one about Shelley which was narrated by Professor Robert Winston and featured footage of the real Villa Diodati in Lake Geneva, Switzerland. He was so lucky to be able to travel there in the flesh and I desperately wish to go there myself. They also reinacted the famous dream scene in which the teenage Mary is inspired during one stormy night in the Villa in her bed. There was bright flashes of thunder and lightning in the night sky over Geneva.German ghost stories were read by Lord Byron and Mary's lover Percy Bysshe Shelley. The also were reading Cristabel by S.T Coleridge and talking about galvanism and scientific experiments.Someone was then seen dancing in the rain;gosh this reminds me of myself!;)Claire Claremont was also brought along for the Romantic fun and ended up having a dangerous leason with Lord Byron. They showed a scene in which Victor walks into a darkened attic-like room which is scattered with severed corpses and human remains and animals used for scientific experiments. Then Mary woke with wild eyes from her dark half-dream.Anyway, it was quite a detailed piece which reinacted scenes while also been a documentary on the writer Mary Shelley and fragments of her life. The main focus was on her early years, before P.B Shelley's sudden drowning death, but they also included a quick scene of her as a young girl when famous writers came to the Godwin house and spoke of 'reanimating corpses' and later on her death bed.Did anyone else happen to watch one of these nineteenth century writer doco-dramas this year?Did you also see Mary Shelley:The Birth of Frankenstein?

I would have to say ALIAS!
I watched all of season 1 and 2 in four nights.... haha (confessions of an ALIAS FANATIC!)
Since then, alias has become part of me. I feel like I KNOW the characters... can anyone relate? or am I just crazy?

I only watched the first few episode but here goes: I can't remeber if there was an actual spaceship or just lights and a disturbance but in a wooded area there was a commotion and 4400 people who were abducted reappeared all at once. There were people from different time periods, different races, different everything. Some of them or all had "special" powers, then it got kinda boring to me and I stopped watching.

Sorry dude... just quoting you for the sake of clarity....
Jen and "That dude on the show" (I assume you're refering to the beautiful Michael Vartan) have been appart for over a year now I do believe, and yet the show goes on, with Jennifer. She's the only one for that role. Replacing her would, as you said, kill the show.

Since so many shows these days seem to be closing down their sets - Will and Grace included - I decided to ask about favorites.

So what's your favorite of the newer or older tv shows? What shows do you hate?

I personally love Numb3rs (though that's not very new) and Heroes, another older one.

Doctor Who/Torchwood/Heroes/Dexter prety much all I make time to watch now...oh, except Chinese TV serials, though some of those are just too predictable and slow for me... I like the ones with errant roving heroes and fighting on the rooftops, together with training sequences that last for more than twenty episodes and turn the main character into a kick-arse mofo to deal to the bad guys.

I abandoned tv for a while, now ... Last thing I followed was House, which I don't know how's doing.

Before that, it used to be Crossing Jordan, if I'm not mistaken. Silly (very silly!), but possible to watch, and funny, in its way.

Before that ... Aw, there was that Battlestar Galactica, which I didn't get until the end either.

And, apart from Star Treks (of which I hated Deep Space 9 and endured Voyager ...),

before that it was Parker Lewis can't loose, back in the '90s. That one was VERY GOOD!, however they were getting worse and worse, toward the end.

(Before that I think it was Duck Tales! :) )

There doesn't seem to be a thread about television, so I'm creating one. I know television shows aren't purposeful or enlightening, but they're entertainment. They're also rather effective procrastination tools, which is nice.

What types of TV shows do you guys watch? Which shows are your favourites? I like Doctor Who, Supernatural, and anything created by Joss Whedon. House and Criminal Minds are also really good.

Currently, I love "The Closer", "NCIS", "Criminal Minds", "30 Rock", "The Big Bang Theory", "How I Met Your Mother", "Burn Notice", "In Plain Sight." I saw many TV series on DVD - House, Monty Python, 40 Something, and lots of mini-series, documentaries. I would like to see Twin Peaks and Northern Exposure again on DVD. I own a lot of shows on DVD from the 60's and 70's. I just love those those old sitcoms - they are scream to watch now. I adored The Twilight Zone - expensive to buy now on DVD's. The old Hitchcock TV Show episodes I have seen on DVD (some of them at least) - they were just great!

Mathor, I must admit that I have watched more Twin Peaks then Northern Exposure. I like Lynch's sense of quirpy drama. His movies are good/intriguing, as well. Years back, I saw Blue Velvet in the movies; don't recall much about it now. I also not long ago I saw Mulholland Drive. Manolia highly recommended it and I have seen it several times now and discussed it with her through PM's.

However, even though I didn't watch a lot of the actual show, I have been to the little town of Roslyn in Washington State (where they filmed the show); I actually saw them shooting an episode of Northern Exposure on a beautiful late summer day; I thought that was pretty exciting. I picked up some nice post cards, while visiting there and I also took some cool photos; wish I had taken more; unfortunately, they are not digital. I recall getting one of side of the cafe. That was the best of the lot. I should try to watch the episodes online now; are they online? I guess Youtube would have them, right? One of my best friends was a big fan of the show, so I know it was pretty cool. I just looked it up online. You can view some neat photos of the cafe on Flickr here:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Roslyn+Cafe+Roslyn&w=all

Also, there is an article here where it tells how the residents of Roslyn were not all that pleased with them using their small mining town as the location of the TV series. See this link:

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,316186,00.html

Twilight Zone was the best! I grew up with that show. My son loved it, too and he went on to adore the X-Files. I liked those, also; but nothing could beat the original Twilight Zone!

I love the Hitchcock Presents, now available on DVD sets. I remember that show well. I always looked forward to viewing it whichever night it aired. It is still so cool. Tonight I have to finish watching the Hitchcock movie Shadow of a Doubt; intriguing as always.

I love the show late at night with Craig Fergusen; I think he's a scream and he always has great guests; I also like Letterman; but mostly, I catch them both online, usually on Youtube. I enjoy earlier The Larry King Show on CNN; sometimes I catch it when he has a good guest.

I've never seen the Canadian version, but I've been led to understand the American version is a lot better anyway.

I love both versions, but I have to say that the Canadian version is more fair to the dancers - all of the Top 20 are given screen time during the audition process. There is also less filler - the results show is only 30 minutes. The Canadian version also features more styles of dance, such as capoeira, African jazz, dancehall, and house. When Dan Karaty guest judged, he said that the Canadian dancers were "second to none."

I recommend the following:

Breaking Bad
There are two lead on the show. Walter who lived his entire life in a straight line who finds out he has cancer. it throws him off course with no understanding of how a "clean" guy like him get this kind of "punishment". he is a chemistry teacher. he meets Jesse, a p crystal meth seller whose life is in complete disarray. Walter ends up helping Jesse. using his skills in chemistry, he makes the finest crytsal meth and starts selling. it explores how one effed up tries to makes sense of everything by trying to fix another effed up life. in the process you understand, with objectivity, how misery really attracts company and how one fundamental need to be needed pushes man to go beyond his bounds in order to feel he matters.

Perfect Strangers
Before Friends, before How I Met Your Mother, before The Big Bang Theory, there was Perfect Strangers. The ultimate story of a disastrously beautiful and funny friendship of two people from different worlds. Balky is from a town no one has heard of before whose sense of family extends to a community. He is innocent and kind to a fault. Larry is the typical American guy drowning in modernity in ambition. Together they find the worst in each other and encourages the best in each other.

Colonial House
This is a reality show inspired by history, for a change. People were made to live the 1628 life where there were no TV and other forms of technology. They discover how people were forced to commune because there was nothing else to do. Their source of entertainment were community bonfire with dancing and singing. Among the points of dissension that arise in the colony were: the rigid class and gender roles, mandatory religious observance, and the puritanical civil laws of the era, particularly those pertaining to profanity. "Not only does 'Colonial House' capture the drama of everyday life in a small colony but it also shows how ordinary people cope -- or in many cases, don't cope -- when removed from all that is familiar and comforting to them in the modern world," said series producer Sallie Clement.

This year started from the start, rewatching the Season 1.

The second season is a prequel, right?

Yeah, it deals with a younger Batiatus taking control of his father's ludus. It also shows Crixus's rise from an inexperienced recruit to the champion of Capua. Unfortunately it's not a full season, it's only six episodes, but it is still very good.

At the minute I'm enjoying the BBC's new crime thriller, The Shadow-Line - which is currently up to episode 5 of 7. It's all on the iPlayer for any Brits out there.

If you can deal with the rather slow first episode, it's very good indeed. A marvellous cast, combined with some wonderful cinematography, a nice noir style, and a script that, while hardly naturalistic, is well thoughfully constructed.

The story revolves around a major London crimelord who is assassinated within hours of obtaining a royal pardon. Following this, both the police and his criminal associates start investigating his murder. It is a slow series, but well worth sticking with, and the twists and turns of the plot are hard to predict.

Also, a certain villainous character is quite possibly simultaneously the coolest and creepiest man I've ever seen on TV...

I pretty much only watch talk shows and reality TV. I'm the worst reality TV junkie ever!

The Real Housewives of NY, Atlanta, Beverly Hills, and the OC
Top Chef
Man vs. Wild
Fatal Attractions (all about people with wild animal obsessions)
Used to watch Oprah, and still love Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz (only occasionally watch any of these shows though)
Bachelor Pad (but never the Bachelor or the Bachelorette)
Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?
Flipping Out
Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Realtime with Bill Maher
The Soup
Kathy Griffen: My Life on the D-List (probably my favorite)
Any of the dance competition shows except Dancing with the Stars
Various news programs ranging from Chris Matthews to Bill O'Reilly to Nancy Grace, but rarely the local news
Project Runway

I tivo and watch about half of these shows on demand and as you can see I drive my boyfriend batty!

Plenty of respect for Freaks & Geeks and Undeclared, two uncommonly good series. And even consider Firefly, a heck of a show that one was. Louie, in terms of what's on TV right now, is untouchable.

There was a Canadian show called Slings and Arrows that featured a younger Rachel Adams. The season arcs were based on the Shakespeare plays that the theater company in the series was performing. This show was a literary feast, funny, and downright entertaining! Top five for sure.

But in terms of incredible television, there are, for this viewer, two shows.

Take a trip back to the years 1988-1993. Yes, you know the show...

The Wonder Years.

That was some phenomenal television right there. This viewer had to catch it later on as it started before he was born. You still have the hots for Winnie Cooper, admit it. At its best, the ingenuity of the storytelling, the use of device, etc. makes it hard to believe that this series was made in the 80's. For its worst episodes, it's an above average comedy-drama. Some of it's storytelling techniques were ahead of its time; others, now neglected or overlooked, would benefit many of the shows on television today.

The second show is hard to even sensibly talk about.

The Decalogue.

It's a polish TV show that has some recognition in English speaking countries. Each one of the ten episodes is about one of the ten commandments but this is not a religious offering. It's more a metaethical discussion with storylines and arcs that will haunt you long after you watch it. And it can be painful, even if you're agnostic/atheist, to see a presentation of an either silent or non-existent god, on a purely human level.

J

EDIT: Also, Masterpiece Theater did a show called Any Human Heart that comes to mind when thinking of exceptional television.

Ah, TV. When it's bad, it's the worst. When it's average, it's still pretty damn bad. But when it's good, oh man, it reaffirms itself as a cultural cornerstone and affects people in a meaningful, artistic way.

Laszlo Jamf
10-21-2011, 08:09 PM
Well of course the Decalogue is going to be the best it was made by the master Krzysztof Kieślowski. As for the Wonder Years meh bogged down by tepid sitcom cliches. Doesn't really have any social commentary within it or anything great done with character. It has pretty run of the mill character arcs etc.

Louie is the best thing to air on TV since The classic era of The Simpsons ended. I mean it's nowhere near as good as classic era Simpsons but yeah everyone should watch Louie.

the new Being Human UK season, love the bad vampire with the phone! but not sure how it will go with all the changes going on.

I am watching Pushing Daisies now, mainly because I heard the creator of that show is trying to make a new Star Trek tv show. but I do like it, it's funny and he seems to be obsessed with death since that guy also made Dead like me.

Without a doubt, my favourite show of all time is 'Eureka'. A show about a town filled with the world's geniuses and scientists.

I would encourage all to watch it, and sign petitions to keep it afloat after this next season, which is when they will allegedly cancel. :P

I'm doing a second watch-through, and have started watching Warehouse 13 as well, which seems like a fun show thus far, but nothing to write home about yet. About halfway through first season and working my way from there.

Have watched and enjoyed Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis. Loved Farscape. :) Robinhood, and Dharma and Greg.

I dislike shows where they brandish a lot of crudeness for no apparent reason. I like subtly and discretion, and artful dialogue, humour and lots of puns. :P

I am not much of a TV person, but when I wake up in the morning, I need at least an hour where I just sit on the couch with a hot cup of coffee and a good show to watch. I usually record the following shows and then watch an episode of whichever one while I wake myself up. I think it's the happiest part of my day!

Top favorite (attempting to write them in order):
Game of Thrones
Downton Abbey
The Walking Dead
Modern Family
True Blood (used to be my favorite but it is going down on my list since I am getting annoyed with Sookie more and more each season)

and I am currently watching Lost on DVD. I just started the second season. I don't know if I like it as much as I liked the first season since I think Jack is turning into a whiner and his role as a leader is starting to be abused. I get pretty annoyed with the way he talks to Locke.

I also enjoy New Girl (it gets better and better with each show. I used to hate it so much), Suburgatory, The Secret Circle (50% because I get fashion tips from the characters and the other 50% because it's fun to make fun of. The story is pretty awful), and reality shows like Survivor and The Colony.

I'd have to say that you've never seen anything like it, but the acting is absolutely wonderful, especially by the main character. (I'm not usually the one who's 'favourite' is the main character, but he's definitely on top in this show. Him and, my first fave, I think her name is X'an. She's blue. :) )

And I mean, there are muppets. This is Jim Henson at his best.

It's pretty funky at first, and you may find yourself saying, ''Well, this is ridiculous,''

But in the end, it's all worth it. Lots of fun story plot twists, believable personalities, and you can tell that the writers and producers put a lot of heart into the show.

There's also a movie after you're done watching all the seasons. They cancelled the show after a fun cliff hanger that made the fans make an uprising and demand a movie. And a movie was made. And the people rejoiced. :)

Honestly, they could've left it at the cliffhanger in my opinion. It was funny. :D But apparently it satisfied everyone involved.

Anyway, Farscape is classic.

Yea, Derrick is cool. Well i don’t have a crush on either of those, but I sort of like Derrick the most. He seems so relaxed all the time…I don’t know, it’s sort of weird…but, I had a crush on MacGyver actually, long time ago of course…but I find him still handsome when I look at MacGyver, I can admit, and also he doesn’t use any weapons. So instead of shooting everyone down, he takes science in use, which is cool, I think.

Older and wider. :wink5:. Have you ever seen the tv show, Chuck? Adam Baldwin has a major role...had a major role, the series is over now but the role of Casey had a a few shades of Jayne to it.

Yes I enjoyed Chuck, Baldwin was very cool in it, a tough soldier guy. Oh and his guest role in Castle was very cool.

oh the song about Jayne was so cool 'the hero of canton the man they call Jayne'

He was a great character. I'll miss that show. There is an old movie called My Bodyguard that features a ridiculously young Adam Baldwin. Check it out if you haven't already and if you can find it.

And yes, The Ballad of Jayne is a classic.

Just watched the season 2 finale of Game of Thrones, man it was good! Damn good show, I haven't read the books yet, maybe I should find the time to do that.

The scenes from the night-watch and Jon Snow were all shot here on the ice, I had no idea the ice looked so good on tv.

Everwood, which is not very well known! The plot and script in this series are clever, funny, at times heartbreaking and believable. The characters are all quirky in their own way and each has a distinctive personality. You can relate to each character too, which is important - even when they make mistakes and hurt others. I couldn't communicate how good this series is in a few words - I'd have to write a very long review!

I am also a fan of Black Books, Black Adder, Doctor Who, American Dad, Futurama and the earlier Simpsons, but I wouldn't say I LOVED these anymore. TV shwos about food also interest me. ;) I prefer those like The Great British Menu, The Great British Bakeoff and Masterchef, but have also really enjoyed Come Dine With Me, Supersize vs. Superskinny and Hell's Kitchen.

Do anime and cartoons count here? The animes Clannad and Death Note are towards the top of my list, as are the cartoons I adored when I was a kid! Animals of Farthing Wood, Moomin, The Racoons, Jackie Chan Adventures and Chip 'n Dale: Resue Rangers will always have a special place in my heart!

I recommend True Blood and no longer think of it as a guilty pleasure. It is one of only two shows still going that I regularly watch. It is well-acted, well-written and has a perfect balance between seriousness and humour, indeed it makes me laugh very hard once or twice an episode. Don't let the vampire thing prejudice you against it like I've seen with some people. It is far more than just a bunch of beautiful people acting out familiar story-lines and themes. It is of course far from Shakespearean, but there is also more depth and nuance to it than you'll find in most other shows.

I've really gotten into Longmire lately. There is so much about that show that reminds me of home, the rural setting situated next to a reservation, filled with stoic, taciturn farmers and ranchers. It's not terrible exciting but I find it incredibly riveting because I recognize that mindset, the influences and culture.

First I'm a fan of "Scrubs". I know every episode. Currently I watch the new episodes of How I met your mother (the ninth season) just because I want to know how Ted and "the mother" get together but I also really like HIMYM. Also I'm a huge fan of BBC's Sherlock <3 I tried to watch Breaking Bad, but I had some unpleasant dreams after the first episodes o.O so I stopped. I like Twin Peaks a lot, Spin City and The Big Bang Theory (but I stopped watching TBBT because I was bored about all the love stuff, it wasn't what I expected after the brilliant first seasons). And Girls (HBO) is also one of my faves.

Hi Neely, People who own the box sets of Breaking Bad seem to be the most popular people in the UK at the moment! From the way people are talking, it looks like it must be about the best program of its genre ever. Luckily someone in our family has it - so I'm patiently awaiting my turn.

I watched a few minutes of Breaking Bad from a set from the library before taking it back. It was far to serious for my entertainment needs. I was able to tolerate more of an old British comedy series by French and Saunders, but I didn't finish the set.

We finally made the decision to discontinue our cable subscription which means we now don't have any TV programming. We are limited to what we get from the library or the internet. Since we weren't watching TV, the change was almost unnoticed, except for the monthly bill reduction.

I did the same about three years ago. TV in the UK is abysmal and why would I want to watch it when I have little interest in sport and I am able to access the films and documentaries that I want to see on YouTube? A few days ago, I was reading a newspaper and idly turned to the page listing that day's TV programmes and it was mostly the same old rubbish they were showing when I ditched the TV set.
I can actually get all of the BBC TV channels on the computer but, except for the occasional worthwhile programme, I never watch them as they consist largely of left-wing propaganda and unfunny so-called comedy shows.

My favourites: Sopranos, The Wire, The Killing, Spiral, Romanzo Criminale, Braquo.

For the last few weeks I've been watching and obsessing over True Detective, which I would rate alongside any of the above mentioned.
It has a very literary, self-referential feel, some very clever meta-fictional moments and is full of nods to genre tropes and philosophical ideas. Also seems to be tied in to the HP Lovecraft mythos. Somehow it manages to pull all this off within a gripping, character driven story. Highly recommended.

I've fallen in love with Boston Legal, which just finished running here on one of our cable channels. Now I watch House to fill the void and it's good, but needs quite a lot of close attention to follow the medical/detective plotline, while Boston Legal was pure fun, relaxation and entertainment, but also thought provoking and emotionally engaging. I don't think I've liked a show this much since MASH. It was excellently written and excellently cast, and there was a Tarantino-like way of introducing just the right song at the right moment. Candice Bergen (Shirley Schmidt) looked great - OK sometimes she looked old but mostly she looked great, and James Spader as Alan Shore and William Shatner as Denny Crane were pure magic and genius.

I could hardly find any video clips to post here, but here's a nice fan video -

Nice list above from mortalterror, covering the past 50 years or so. Judging from the contents of the list, however, I'll bet Fawlty Towers was omitted as an oversight, and should have been included, maybe as number 51. Naked and Afraid - Not just another one of those survival shows, it's really quite harsh... one man and one woman, left naked to fend for themselves for 21 days in the wilderness, or desert, or jungle. It's interesting to note though, that it's usually the women that fair better. Mental toughness seems to outweigh physical toughness.

Almost Royal - A faux reality series with two very young English aristocrats touring America. It's America bashing done in brilliant fashion! Very politically incorrect.

Tosh.0 - The show is just plain hilarious.

Impractical Jokers - Four New Yorkers strive to embarrass each other. Unlike other shows of this type, they don't set out to humiliate strangers, they just humiliate each other. They are very witty and the stunts they pull are actually quite clever.
