Larry was an octopus who liked to do many things that octopuses like to do. He liked to juggle, play cards and paint. Larry was a very good painter because he had eight very long tentacles to paint with!
One day Larry was out for a morning jog with his friend Theodore the starfish when Larry saw a very tasty looking morsel dangling in front of him. “Mmmm,” said Larry, “what a very tasty looking morsel dangling in front of me!” Larry stretched out one very long tentacle to grab the tasty morsel.
“I don’t think you should touch that Larry,” Theodore said. “We don’t know where it came from”. Theodore was a very cautious starfish.
“What’s the worst that could happen?” Larry asked as he wrapped one very long tentacle around the tasty morsel.
Meanwhile, on top of the water there was a very experienced sushi chef and his young apprentice sitting on a boat.
“Unagi!” shouted the sushi chef, “yesterday you caught no fish. The day before that you caught no fish, and the day before that you caught no fish. How can you ever become a famous sushi chef like me if you do not catch any fish?”
“I’m very sorry Master Wasabi,” Unagi apologized. “I will try very hard and I will catch you some fish to make into sushi”.
“Very good Unagi” Master Wasabi said. “Now I am going to go have a nap and when I wake up I hope to see a fish!” As Master Wasabi headed to his cabin for a nap Unagi turned glumly to his fishing rod.
“What will I do?” he groaned, “I did not catch any fish yesterday, or the day before that, or the day before that and if I do not catch any fish today, how will I ever become a sushi chef like Master Wasabi?” Just then the line on Unagi’s fishing rod moved. “Oh my! The line on my fishing rod moved! That must mean I have caught a fish!” Unagi shouted. Unagi grabbed the fishing rod and began to reel in the line.
Back under the sea, Larry the octopus was pulling very hard on his tasty morsel but every time the tasty morsel got close to his mouth something pulled it away from him.
“Help Theodore!” Larry cried, tugging on the morsel with all eight of his very long tentacles. Theodore, being the cautious starfish that he was, hesitated; food shouldn’t fight back. However Theodore was not only a very cautious starfish, he was also a loyal starfish and Larry needed his help. So, Theodore grabbed on to the tasty morsel and tugged with all of his might. Being a starfish, Theodore wasn’t very strong and the two friends could not get the tasty morsel into Larry’s mouth. Together they tugged, they pulled and they yanked.
On the deck of the boat Unagi the apprentice was having just as much trouble pulling his catch onto the deck. Unagi tugged, he pulled and he yanked. After a great deal of tugging, pulling, and yanking his catch flew out of the water and landed with a ‘plop!’ onto the deck. It was Larry and Theodore!
“Octopus!” Unagi exclaimed, clapping his hands. “Master Wasabi will be so pleased! You my little friend will become the tastiest sushi I have ever made!”
“Wait!” Cried Unagi as Larry scuttled away from the deck. “Please don’t go! I didn’t catch any fish yesterday, or the day before that, or the day before that, and now I have finally caught something. If you get away oh how will I ever become a sushi chef like Master Wasabi?”
“But I don’t want to be made into sushi!” Larry said. “I want my tasty morsel and I want to go back to the ocean where I can juggle, play cards and paint because that’s what octopuses do!”“I’m very sorry Mr. Octopus but I can’t let you go. If I do than I will never become a sushi chef,” Unagi explained.
Larry stroked his face thoughtfully with one very long tentacle. “Hmmm,” Larry said, “I think I have an idea…” Larry scuttled over to Unagi and whispered his plan into his ear.
“Do you really think that will work?” Unagi asked.
“Positive,” Larry said as he and Theodore scuttled to the edge of the deck and jumped into the water.
“Where are we going?” Theodore asked Larry as they swam to the bottom of the ocean.
“You’ll see,” Larry said.
The two friends swam around and around the bottom of the ocean until Larry spotted a very long green squishy object. “Perfect!” Larry cried, “Quick Theodore, grab on, and pull!” The two friends grabbed hold of the long green squishy object and they tugged, they pulled and they yanked. After a great deal of tugging, pulling and yanking the long green squishy object came out of the sand with a ‘Plop!’.
“C’mon Theodore!” Larry cried, and they each grabbed on to one end of the long green squishy objects and swam back towards the surface.
On the boat Unagi paced back and forth nervously. “Where oh where is Larry and Theodore? Master Unagi could wake up at any minute!” Unagi’s complaining was interrupted by a bubbling sound as Larry and Theodore came out of the water, carrying the long green squishy object between them. Larry and Theodore tossed the long green squishy object on to the deck where it landed with a ‘plop!’ and climbed on to the boat after it.
“What is it?” Unagi asked, bending down to carefully poke the long green squishy object.
“It’s a sea cucumber!” Larry proclaimed as he puffed out his chest with pride, “and I’m going to show you how to make vegetarian sushi with it!”
“Vegetarian sushi?” Unagi asked.
“Yes! Here, give me some seaweed and rice, I’ll show you!” Larry cried. Unagi handed Larry some seaweed, rice and a knife to cut the sea cucumber and watched in disbelief as Larry carefully wrapped thin slices of the sea cucumber in the rice and seaweed. Once the long roll was completed, Larry carefully cut the role into smaller bite sized rolls.
“Try it!” Larry told Unagi as he grasped one of the bite sized rolls and stretched one very long tentacle to Unagi. Unagi took one very careful bite.
“Mmmmm!” Unagi said after a moment of very thoughtful chewing. “That’s delicious!”
Suddenly, a loud booming voice came from the inside of the cabin; “Unnnnaaaaagggiiii! I’m done my nap! I hope you have caught some fish for me today!”
“Uh oh! It’s Master Wasabi!” said Unagi, “You two had better hide or else he might turn you in to sushi!” Larry and Theodore scuttled away from Unagi and jumped in to the water where they floated and waited for Master Wasabi to come taste the very tasty vegetarian sushi that Larry and Theodore had prepared.
“Well Unagi,” Master Wasabi asked as he came out of his cabin, “Did you catch anything today?”
“Y-yes sir, I did. And I made this,” Unagi presented the plate of sea cucumber sushi to Master Wasabi.
“Hmmmm…” said Master Wasabi, “I have never seen anything like this before”.
“Try it!” Unagi told Master Wasabi as he grasped one of the bite sized rolls and stretched one arm to Master Wasabi. Master Wasabi took one very careful bite.
“Mmmmm!” Master Wasabi said after a moment of very thoughtful chewing. “That’s delicious!”
Suddenly, a very loud voice came from the water; “Yea! We did it Theodore!”
“Shhhh, Larry, be quiet or Master Wasabi will find us!” Theodore warned.
Unagi ran to the edge of the boat, “both of you be quiet! Master Wasabi will find you!”
“Unagi who are you talking too?” Master Wasabi asked as he walked to the edge of the deck to see what Unagi was looking at. “Octopus!” Master Wasabi exclaimed, clapping his hands. “I am so pleased! You my little friend will become the tastiest sushi I have ever made!” Master Wasabi reached over the edge of the deck and he tugged, pulled and yanked Larry and Theodore out of the water. Master Wasabi then dropped the two friends on to the deck where they landed with a ‘Plop!’
“Get the seaweed ready Unagi! I’m going to show you how to make octopus and starfish sushi!”
“Help us Unagi!” Larry and Theodore screamed. Unagi hesitated a moment, he didn’t want Master Wasabi to be angry with him. Larry brandished six of his very long tentacles at Master Wasabi who was cornering the two friends. Theodore hid.
“No!” Screamed Unagi throwing himself in front of Larry and Theodore, “You can’t hurt them! They’re my friends! They helped me make the Sushi!”
“An octopus and a starfish making sushi? That can’t be true, is it?” Master Wasabi asked. Unagi sadly shook his head ‘yes’.
“It’s true,” Unagi confessed, “Larry and Theodore got me the sea cucumber and showed me how to make vegetarian sushi. I know, I know, I’ll never be a great sushi chef like you Master Wasabi” Unagi said as he started to cry.
“Hmmm” Master Wasabi said as he stroked his chin thoughtfully, “I think you did a very good job today Unagi. Not only did you manage to catch an Octopus and a Starfish but you got them to fetch you vegetables to make in to sushi. You will become a very good sushi chef Unagi”.
“Really?” asked Unagi, his eyes still wet with tears.
“Really,” Master Wasabi said, “Now, what should we do with you two? Unagi and I owe you very much for all the help you have been”.
“You could let us go home” Theodore piped up from his hiding spot behind Larry.
“Wait Theodore, I have a better idea,” Larry said as he scuttled over to Master Wasabi and whispered his plan in to his ear.
At the bottom of the ocean Larry and Theodore sat on a very large pile of tasty morsels popping them one by one in to their mouths where they landed with a ‘plop!’
