There are some works in your life that you read once and forget it all. However there are some that can last in your mind for a long time and leave something unforgetable.”The Leprous”,which is the most famous and typical work of the Polish writer H. Mniszek,is a worthwhile one. This is a romantic love story which is either beautiful or bright, passionate but heart-rending of a couples to fight to protect their love from the discrimination of classes in society. So it is considered as the second piece of Romeo and Julliet-a contrary tragedy between the genuine love and narrow social prejudice. And above all, this work gave me another viewpoint about how love can survive even in the harshest situation like that and how people fight for their happiness. That is one of the true values I learnt from “The Leprous”.
The first impression when I read this book is the title “The leprous”.It is a rather strange name that attracts my attention at the first sight. The title “leprous” reminds me of a kind of infectous disease that people insult and keep away from ones with that disease. But after reading through the book,I understood what “the Leprous” means. It doesn’t indicate any leprous person in the story, but it implies a talent, beautiful and normal woman who symbolizes the low-classes in society. And that was also the way high-classes called the lower one in the society at that time.People appreciated others by their appearance and position. All they cared about each other is how they dressed and which classes they belonged to,not that who they are and what they do.Although Stefchia-the woman in the story is a pretty and intelligent person, she was never respected by the noble. She was always a “leprous” just because she was born in a normal family and her father was a small farm owner. That is the root of classes discrimination that was the barrier between two lovers who were from different classes. Thus,”The leprous” partly reflects the background of society at the beginning of 20th century which was unfair and prejudiced. However, love can still exist regardless of any barriers and I wholeheartedly admire their ideal and desire for a true happiness.
Therefore, the main viewpoint of this book is the appreciation of true love in any harsh situation. That is also what I feel about the story.Love is fighting and sacrificing. In the story,Valdy-the main man protagonist used to say that”Yes, I’m a noble, but I’m just a normal person, and I have the right to love and find out my own happiness”.So that’s why he can ignore every criticism and disapproval of his family and others who are in the same class about his marriage and determined to break the rules of the society. Two of them had to fight against themselves, their family and many people who wanted to separate them by power. And,finally they won. However, the story ended with the death of Stefchia due to their intrigue. She has died to sacrifice for her love, just like mercy can win everything. This is also a judgment for an unfair society that has destroy their happiness. After all, love has survived in two of them and I appreciate the way they fight for their love with lofty and beautiful ideal and strong desire of normal people.I got from this story the message that love doesn’t involve in the discrimination of classes or any aspects, but it needs sincere and wholehearted heart. That’s the reason why inspite of the unhappy-ending,”The Leprous” has still preocupied a position in many readers’ mind.
Besides, another aspect of the book that attracts me is the language.I love the way the writer sets up the misunderstanding between the couple and the way she solves the problem in a clever way.The language is extremely beautiful with many paragraph describing the scenery as well as the character’s mood that can easily inspire the readers.I can’t stop reading until the last page because it makes me continually imagine what is going on.
As time goes by,everything has changed , but the values of literary works have remained and have a strong influence on our life.”The Leprous” is one of works like that. Readers nowadays easily realize the idealisation and romanticism in the love story of the couple at the beginning century. However,”The Leprous” has waken the desire to live devotedly,to love wholeheartedly and to sacrifice for happiness when in need. Moreover, people nowadays should respect each other as everyone is a part of the world and this means that we are building a good relationship between human so that there is no discrimination and hatred in our community:flare:
