I am currently writing a fraction fairy tale in my creative writing class. I basically have to put my own spin on a classic fairy tale. I want to do Cinderella and I wanted to have it set in the Middle Ages. The thing is I want to have my dialogue in the story to sound very recent, as if you would hear the conversations between the characters in the modern time. Does anyone have any opinions on whether this is a good idea or not? I don't want my dialogue to not fit with the story.

The trouble with trying to write in an archaic style is that it can be very difficult to do well - something littered with 'prithee' and 'forsooth' can sound dreadfully corny.
Also, the simple fact of the matter is that we do not know how people talked in the Middle Ages. We have nothing to go off. Chaucer, for example, may be a medieval man speaking to us, but you can bet that the common folk weren't speaking in decasyllabic rhyming couplets - if so, what else has he changed?
My advise would be to stick with a modern style - though, of course, I'm sure it'll work out either way!:D
