(MUAHAHAHA)

Someone please complain for me,
Because I will not make it-
Tell them I didn’t get a checkered flag,
I didn’t get a head start.
No, the shot that rang out didn’t say:
“Go!” –
It said:
Stop.
And I did, my harvest rolling
Across the lawn.
And now the jaws
Of a proud pup close around me,
And my baby cries silently
In hunger, from the hollow–
I didn’t get to tell him,
“Watch for cars,
And motorbikes,
And boys with bb guns – “
Alas,
My tail will twitch and swish
No more.
Aw, nuts.

I love it!

But I have to reply

There she went
across the lawn
scampering quickly
to collect her nuts
to come and feed me
my hungry mouth

but whats this?
she has stopped
limp and unmoving
darkening the grass
flowing red

Two boys stand
there in the doorway
something long and black
resting between them
one turns and looks
up at me
and the barrel points
And I fall

I should NOT be laughing, but I am now. THIS IS WAAAAR.

Granddaddy died two years ago,
And no, I don't remember it at all.
All I know's that he didn't get up,
After he made some great big fall.

I didn' know nothin' 'bout dyin',
Didn' know one thing of death
'Til yesterday, I saw a squirrel
And her babe breathe their last breath.

Them boys, they didn't notice me,
Between the leaves, in the trees-
I saw it all, the spraying blood,
The living bodies twitch, then freeze.

Sure, I know it well and good
That, "All things die, as all things should"
But all the things my parents say
Can't explain why I bawled that day.

Oh wisp you make me smile. :)

Two of our best died that day
countless others in their wake
tears were cried many a night
but redemption will be wraught

In swarms we came
balls of fluff with tooth and claw
screaming towards the enemy
no fear in numbers

ripping and tearing at the little black and white
the odd looking creature he calls "magic"
Always barking as we flick our tails
he will bark no more

two of our best died that day
that fateful day not long ago
tears were cried but revenge cries louder
the "magic" will bark no more

I call it "revenge of the squirrels"

The boy first saw him
Early in the morning
Waking up for work
But no work today
Black and white his dog lay
Drenched in the new color of red
Scratches and holes
Throughout the body
Still warm, his only love

The forest was bright
And alive with sound
The squirrels watched from above
As he dug his hole
And placed the black and white and red inside
Crying deep tears
And screaming hate towards the heavans
As he filled the hole with the earth itself

The red can glimmered
Splashing liquid unto a pine
A match from his pocket
Struck with haste on the ground
And tossed unto the tree

The boy still cries
Over the mound of dirt below him
The forest burns
With the final act

Ah, my dear friend! I was about to comment on the fine poem that began this thread but then I paused to read the wonderful exchange between you and Kevin - such an eloquent, funny and heartfelt exchange on both parts.

(Kevin: did you get that? "on both parts")

What fun, what joy to experience the skill and spontaneity in each of you.

Truce

March rains muddle ash and dirt
Wash away, wash away
Echoes fade of red alert
Wash away, wash away

Fires fall in forest slain
Wash away, wash away
Guiltless in a cruel campaign
Wash away, wash away

Ghosts and mists, mingled, rise
Wash away, wash away,
Survivors in the war’s demise
Wash away, wash away

Dream wispers of gray morning call
Wash away, wash away
They halt the course of cool rainfall
Wash away, wash away

In grief, the boy lies fast asleep
Wash away, wash away
And through his dreams the wispers sweep
Wash away, wash away

“No vict’ry gained, yet all’s amiss,”
Wash away, wash away,
“And so to you, I promise this –“
Wash away, wash away,

“- A day unlived, a life to spare.
Let’s wash away, let's wash away
The profits of that ill affair,
Let’s wash away, let’s wash away."

The boy awakens the day before
No kill to make, no settled score
Dreams once dreamt remain undreamed–
The forest stands, her youth redeemed.
The bark of Magic, proof to tell
That all is fine, the day is well-
A squirrel’s life is soon to pass,
But magic’s life was meant to last.

We've washed away,
Washed away,
Washed away the war.

You guys actually wrote some good stuff doing this. I laughed, I cried, your writing made me feel it all! :D)

I liked this: "Balls of fluff with tooth and claw..."

Thank you qimi! Wispy's first poem made me laugh so hard (she was replying to my poem "ode to squirrels") that I had to reply. And soon it was WAR!!!!
And I am particularly proud of that line.
