I just started the book today on the ferry from Anacortes to San Juan Island. I was not expecting it to be so good. In fact, I was dreading having to read the book but now, I can not seem to put it down. I was looking to read more of the authors novels but I wanted to know if any of them were as good. I have heard of The Joy Luck Club but I have also heard that the writing was not as good. What is the verdict?

I read The Joy Luck Club last year out of curiosity and enjoyed it. There was nothing technically wrong with the writing, though some people prefer certain styles over others. One thing that takes a bit of getting used to is having 8 different narrators, but they don't segue randomly into each other; they're all divided nicely into discrete chapters.

Being a first-generation Asian-American and living in the San Francisco area, I related immensely to the book, so I may be biased in what I'm saying. But check it out for yourself; don't let others discourage you from reading it.

btw, if you like Amy Tan, I'd also recommend The Hundred Secret Senses. It was the first novel I read from her and it got me interested enough to read her most famous.
