i happened to find the site while looking for lists of total works including short stories and obscure serials by joseph conrad. at a simply cursory glance at the associated threads, it seems that the only people reading conrad have to in order to fulfill some educational requirement. where is the true appreciation for this extraordinary author who at times was harshly criticized by his contemporaries.

Greeting cfh,

I'm embarrassed to say that I read Lord Jim and Heart of Darkness (three times) only under the mandates of higher education. I liked him, but didn't love him.

Well, I love Conrad and read him without the mandates from a higher authority. :D He's truely one of the great writers. Ive read Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo, Nigger of the Narcisus, Victory, The Secret Agent, and Typhoon. And perhaps a short story or two that I've forgotten. It's probably time to read another Conrad work. Any suggestions you may have read that I have not?

i began with heart of darkness in high school read nothing more until last year, then i was given Lord Jim as a gift by my wife due to its relationship with maritime culture. i then picked up Almayers Folly and read all his works in chronology as best i could. i loved everyone more and more. Conrad, being a sailor, and the time period in which he wrote both have increased my appreciation of his work. there is something in his descriptive ability that really appeals to my senses.

Yes, he's a fine writer, both as a prose stylist and as a story teller. Try some of the other works I listed. I really enjoyed them all.
