we talked to fill
the silence and the
uncomfortable places in our hearts;
we soothed our doubts
with a comforting cool spring of
uninformative information;
we seemed to say a lot,
but we said the most
the time we talked
with silence and our eyes
(inspired by Prince)

Hi qim! It also reminds me of a song that was popular a while back. I can't remember much of the lyrics but the line "you say it best when you say nothing at all" stuck with me. There is nothing more effective than a pregnant pause.

I had the notion from the beginning that it might have been inspired by "In that small space" but all the same felt so honoured when you creditted me at the end.
Those last five words, "with silence and our eyes" are so unforced, so lacking in bravado - and so poignant.

:) Thanks Prince.
I read a short story as a teenager about a shy girl who was "mentored" by a slightly older popular girl, and one of the things the girl told her was to talk, to never let a space go by, without filling it, and she did. One day she came out of the school to find him walking with a girl-much like she had been, quiet and shy, and they weren't talking at all, just walking, and looking each other in the eyes.

This made me think of a girl I knew slightly in high school, named Henrietta, who spoke so softly that I would always incline my head towards her which made our every conversation feel intimate.
