Anyone else here a fan of his? I might have read something of his earlier but just recently read with absolute fascination His Illegal Self, in which I felt so passionately involved with the two main characters, and am now reading Theft.

I have Jack Maggs but I haven't read it yet. So I will have to get to you on this one.

I've been very impressed by his True History of the Kelly Gang, don't know anything else written by him, though :)

I read The True History of the Kelly Gang a few years ago and I simply regard it as a masterpiece, both in terms of the way the strory evolves and the language Carey uses to capture the atmosphere and pass the book's message.

However, I couldn't finish the other Booker Prize winner from the same author, Oscar and Lucinda. Strangely enough, it was Carey's writing style in this book that I found boring...

I read My Life as a Fake. Wasn't too impressed.

I've read his short stories. I liked them. He has a very refreshing way of looking at life.

Read his 'Illywhacker'. Not a bad read but not 100% my thing. Have no idea how it stacks up against his other stuff but might be worth checking out. :)

I recently attended a talk and book signing by Peter Carey. I bought his latest book Parrot and Olivier in America and also Oscar and Lucinda. I have just finished reading True History of the Kelly Gang. A fine, dazzling, moving piece; well-deserving of the Booker Prize that it got.

I am a huge fan, he is the quintessential master of the metaphor, many times unnoticed on first reading, but reading closer you come to realise just how succinct he can be. I keep meaning to get around to Kelly Gang and Illywhacker
but all the others are great

I own 'Oscar and Lucinda' but haven't gotten round to reading it yet. Looks interesting, though.

loved True History of Kelly Gang and read a book he wrote about Japan when he visited with his son.

Been keen to read more, but never seem to remember him when at the store / auction site
