Hi there.
Some years ago when I still went to school, in our lit-class, our teacher gave each one of us a certain poem to learn by heart and perform in front of the class - I remember I especially liked one of the poems I heard - in it a poet looked out of a window, saw some soldiers out there and wrote how much more than a poet he would like to be a soldier and earn glory, using weapons and also a broom. In the end the poet muses that if he had enlisted, he would now already be a corporal. Overall, the poem had a slightly sarcastic feel.
I would like to see and read this poem again.I think that it originated from somewhere of 19th or 18th century and the poet is probably quite famous.
I heard it in translation so the wording might differ but could you help me?

It would require at least one more relevant fact to find your poet.

Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren

Wenn die Soldaten
durch die Stadt marschieren,
Öffnen die Mädchen
die Fenster und die Türen.
Ei warum? Ei darum! Ei warum? Ei darum!
Ei bloß wegen dem Schingderassa, Bumderassa, Schingdara!
Ei bloß wegen dem Schingderassa, Bumderassasa!

Zweifarben (Zweierlei) Tücher, Schnauzbart und Sterne
Herzen und küssen die Mädchen so gerne
Ei warum? Ei darum!.....

Eine Flasche Rotwein und ein Stückchen Braten
Schenken die Mädchen ihren Soldaten
Ei warum? Ei darum!.....

Wenn im Felde blitzen Bomben und Granaten,
Weinen die Mädchen um ihre Soldaten.
Ei warum? Ei darum!.....

Kommen die Soldaten wieder in die Heimat,
Sind ihre Mädchen alle schon verheirat'.
Ei warum? Ei darum!.....

I don't know if this is the poem you are looking for but I have a celebrated recording of Marlene Dietrich singing a musical version of it.
