I had nothing to say,
really, in the end
but for the pleasure
of the saying.

So I made myself a life
and a character. I was
happy-Jack, Joe, Poem,
Jew (dirty Jew, to some).

For maybe ten or so minutes
I fancied myself a secular saint
but my halo was dinged
and smelled of the rancid workshop
where it was coined.

So this, in the end,
is all I want to say to you:

I was here.
I am here.
