Good day to all Litnets!

Just want to share my success in my musical play I directed in our school last Friday, Les Miserables from the novel of Victor Hugo. It was my second time to direct a musical play, the first one was Joseph and the Amazing technicolor Dreamcoat. Both of them were successful.
Actually they were only lip sing but directing those musicals were hard. I'm planning to direct Sound of Music this coming school year...

How about the others here?? Do you also love to watch musical plays or stage plays? I guess so...

Congratulations on directing Les Miz. It's my all-time favorite musical.

To answer your question...yes, I love musical theater. My latest favorite is Wicked, but I also enjoyed Man of La Mancha, Rent, Kiss Me Kate, Jesus Christ Superstar, and...dare I say it...Phantom.

I love to see both, but in terms of acting I can only go for stage plays as I cannot sing. It used to annoy me that my school had a period of about 4 years when all it did were musicals.

Ohh... Phantom of the Opera... My principal is also requesting me to do that... But I much prefer Sound of Music or Oliver Twist this next school year...:D

Congrats.

I saw Chicago last year at another high school and I loved it (I tend not to like musicals). I'm going to see The Drawer Boy in a week which is supposed to be one of the best Canadian plays -- and Canadian theater doesn't get a lot of recognition.

At the moment I'm in A Few Good Men which will be performed at my school in a couple of months. It's going along well. Our school has a tiny stage though, so walking around on stage while keeping a "military" posture (not looking around, keeping back straight etc.) is pretty difficult.

Congratulations on a successful production, jhonerliz - now you can get back to getting some sleep at nights!

I musical directed Joseph many years ago and it was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life: the school policy was to get all the children in the production somewhere, so if a child could not act, dance, march, remember lines, guess where he/she ended up? That's right, in the chorus - my existing choir was greatly reduced because the best singers were taken for the leading roles and those who were left had to help along all these new non-singers who turned up to rehearsals very excited because they were in the play but who could not hold a tune and could not remember words. Then part way through rehearsals the Headmaster acquired a truly splendid electronic keyboard and decided it would be nice if I could play it instead of the piano, using all the special effects, of course. So not only did I have all these musically challenged chorus members, I had a new instrument to master to performance level (as well as a class to teach, after-school clubs, the County Primary Schools' Music Festival) - and my husband wondered why I wasn't sleeping well!

Yes, of course it went off well but it was years before I could hear anything by Lloyd Webber without my heart rate galloping. :)

Yes, directing musicals are really hard.. That's why as you can read in my post, it was only lip sings. We only have small institution with small number of students. So, talented students are limited. So we just focused on the appreciation of literary works through music. Its nice to see students happy when they impressed their parents with their acts. ;))

 I despise musicals... they seem contrived and cheesy 95% of the time. And I just don't like... musical theatre. It's a bastardization of two things that I have great passion for. Neither are at their best in this form. The only musicals I like are band musicals in film form- e.g. Across the Universe, The Doors, etc. Oh yeah, and Rocky Horror (which is the cheesiest thing ever, admittedly...) I haven't yet seen a stage musical I've liked. (Personal opinion, please take no offence.)

It's ok... different people have different tastes.. :)

I am positively obsessed with musicals. For me, they are the greatest form of entertainment. Nothing is better than watching people spontaneously bursting into a song and dance about anything from love to a cup of coffee. :p I love them!!!! :D

Congratulations on directing your play. It must be quite an accomplishment (no joking).

As for whether I like plays/musicals. Nope. I don't. I'd rather have a beer at the tavern or go fishing. But I can fully appreciate the work and delight that one could take from live performance.

I love plays! Often played on Christmas plays when I was a kid (and once I was an angel :D). Congrats!

My favs plays: The Crucible, Our Town <--both are pretty deep.

My fav musicals: Anything Goes (basically anything that Cole Porter wrote the music to)

All through school I was the lead in plays usually. But after high school I didn't have as much time to do theatre.

Comedian, you're also right. its one of my greatest achievements as a teacher. Thanks

I love school theater productions! It is, in fact, my favorite form of theater. ;) Musicals in general are a bit too cheesy for me, but when they are performed by high school students, there is this energy that I just love. Even if the performance itself isn't perfect, you can see how much the kids love it and how into it they are, and that makes it great.

I suppose I feel this way from being involved in theater productions in middle school and high school - usually as backstage/tech and stage manager. But even now, I love to see them. We did Joseph when I was in high school. And a few years ago I saw it performed by my colleague's son's high school. It was so wonderful to see it again. :) It's a great show.
