i have to do an essay answering this question: in what sense is hughes et witty poet.
i dont quite understand it, any help would be great

Witty is not the most obvious epitaph for Hughes, but If "wit" means cleverness then he easily qualifies. But he rarely uses his cleverness for conventional humour.
Remember he is from Yorkshire, (born not 2 miles from where I live.) Yorkshire humour is bleak and unforgiving its about harsh truths and plain speaking. Fatalism is an admired character trait the "joke" is often about the yorkshireman's unconventional mindset.
It might be useful to search engine "Yorkshire Humour" or "Yorkshire wit". to get a handle on where he's from.
