'Why should one feel it to be intolerableunless one had some kind of ancestral memory that things had once been different?'

It makes you feel better if you are made known that the things that existed
before you were worse and/or conditions of the people around you are worse than yours. Its like 'ignorance is bliss'. If you do not have the knowledge of the existence of a thing there is no chance of liking or disliking it. Hence no craving or yearning for the thing.

Hmm, check out this website's analysis of the theme of "memory and the past" in 1984. I think it'll jump-start your brainstorming on this topic:

Also, if you go to the "quotes" tab, I believe this very quote is discussed under the "memory and the past" theme. Good luck!

They were my thoughts exactly- that you cant miss something that you havent had before

My teacher, however, disagrees. She said that I need to look for the deeper meaning. Any other thoughts on this?
