If I'm not mistaken, I believe it has something to do with his father. I haven't read the play in over a year and I do not have a copy on me presently, but I remember it being either his father receiving poor wages or his father beating him; I'm not sure which.

Love that play!
I think it's Jimmy's passion that makes the audience sympathise. He is frustrated at society's inability to get worked up about anything.
And also his best friend's mother dies and he gets sad about that.

What Kelby said above. But also that he reflected the human condition at the time, what he felt - isn't there a line which goes something there's no good cause left to die/fight for? or maybe it's another play - but he wasn't alone in what he felt - it was pretty much everybody's feeling at the time and audiences found a voice in his character.

Yeah, I do know the quote... it's something about fighting for the 'big nothing-thank-you-very-much'
