Abjection is basically being able to make fun of yourself. Rodney Dangerfield's standup acts are a perfect model of the use of abjection.
There is more to abjection though. It is being able to be made fun of by other people without taking offense.
An example I just saw on a news reel Conan O'Brian making fun of Jay Leno. And Conan always makes fun of Jay Leno in a way that would enrage me...but they are still close friends.
I was wondering if that kind of outlook was compatible with your way of thinking. That it is a good thing to be able to not take yourself seriously so that you would be impenetrable from would be tormentors.
OR
do you take the approach that if you WERE to NOT take yourself seriously, that kind of nonchalance would jeapordize your work ethic and your ethics in general. You fear that you'd become a lesser human being (in a sense) because of it
I'd appreciate some of your thoughts. I would classify myself more in category two because I do take life seriously. I take my work seriously, and I believe that I can make a difference in the world and get a greater satisfaction in life in the long run, if I keep my head down and work my butt off, while staying sensitive to those around me
But then again, I'm thinking that perhaps a greater achievment would be to be able to make fun of yourself, but in a way that you could get away with it because you know that your strengths more than make up for your shortcomings. I would think that forcing abjection on yourself -- like if I for example were to just start cutting myself apart in front of my friends would be a bad thing. But a worthy goal would be to being able to be comfortable with criticism and even a little self deprecating humor. It would let you know that you are being the best you can be.
Your thoughts please.
