Marry looked at the calendar on her wall, it was the 4th of month, and asked her friend, interested to hear the latest news about her employment in some well known company:
"So, what's new, Jane? You've applied for your new job on the 1st, have they made a decision?"
Jane's eyes were bright with happiness, she jumped and gave Marry a firm hug.
"They will employ me! I am starting tomorrow!" - she sang, held her arms up, and started turning around to express her joy over the happy news.
The first week was filled with pleasure. She finally got the job of her dreams. She even fell in love with one of the bosses, the one who had been mostly interested to make Jane their new employee. They worked together and spent the rest of the days together, making plans for their new life. Everything was so fitting in, so pleasurable. After a gloomy life she had had before, Jane was recovering from loneliness and changing for better.
One day, by the end of the month of her new life, she was to meet her new boyfrined, and colleague at work, but he did not come. She phoned him, but his voice sounded very cruelly. Jane was astonished.
"What's wrong?" - she asked him.
"Nothing's wrong. I'm just too tired of you!" - said James poisonously.
Jane could not believe her ears.
"But... sweetie...", she started to cry, "what are you talking about? Do you know who are you talking to?"
James cut the connection, leaving Jane to stare at the receiver without understanding what was going on.
It was a work-day morning. She went out totally messed up and unconscious of what she was doing. She just walked, and walked, and walked... The rain was falling all over her body. She was not, even, aware of it. Rain and tears were soaking her face, unable to wash away the expression of loss from it. She thought of nothing, just wandered around, not knowing where she was, or what she was doing.
Finally, she remembered that she was supposed to go to work. She turned around to see where she was, took a taxi and went to her office.
When she entered the building, everything seemed rather strange to her. There was nobody there.
"Have I lost my mind?" - thought Jane.
Halls were dark, offices were empty. There was only one, at the end of the hall, from where some light was coming out. Jane knocked on it's door, and, after being invited to come in, she entered and saw James standing by a desk. He looked at Jane as if he saw her for the first time in his life.
"Can I help you, Miss?" - he said with the most charming smile, the smile he was giving to every nice lady he met for the first time. Jane just watched him, speechlessly.
"Miss..." - said James, with signs of worry in his voice, "are you feeling well?"
He approached her and wanted to touch her, but she stepped back to aviod his touch. James got embarrassed, not knowing what to do.
"Are you looking for someone?" - he continued, trying to understand why did she look so confused.
Jane's eyes fell on his desk and she saw a calendar, it was the 2nd of month. Jane's cheeks got pale, and her body began to swing. James held her, and made her sit in one of the chairs.
"Do you want a glass of water, I'll bring you one."
James was really afraid for her. Jane, pulled herself together, and whispered.
"Oh, no. Don't bother, I'll be all right. Just give me a second."
They both kept silent for a while, then Jane explained.
"I've applied for job here, but I've come to withdraw my application... if you please."
James looked surprised a bit, but he went to his desk and wrote down the name she told him and promissed that he would inform the selection board about her decision. They bid good-bye to each other, and Jane
flew out into the rain, winged by an exquisite feeling of freedom.
