As is Gabriel Oak. I would just like to point out, that unwittingly perhaps, the poster has lmited her selection to only white, Anglo-Saxon, protestants (unless we consider the English creations in other countries to be foreign, so that Shakespeare's Romeo is perhaps really from Verona).

May I ask what these gents are battling? Are they coming to blows with each other and we are choosing which would win in test of fists? (I do hope it's this one). Or are we choosing which one is the dreamy-ist?

I can't pick just one. I like darcy, Rochester, Rhett Butler, etc. Impossible poll.

Ok. I picked one. I like Darcy best but only in the movie so i decided that doesn't really count. Same with Butler. I love the character of rochester. I don't think anyone has made a good enough movie for him so his is truely the book character i like best. if you can understand that mess of a sentence.

Since when is Atticus Finch a Romantic hero?

And yes, Wentworth is missing yet again. Of the ones listed, I guess I'd have to go for Darcy or Carton.

Aow. Darcy, ugh. I definately find other better than him.

I chose Rhett Butler, however, if I had looked better and seen Sydney Carton, I would have chose him....He is my favorite.

And Since when was Atticus Finch a romantic hero? That is very strange indeed. Really, when I thought of Romantic Hero, I imagined Natty Bumpo...haha love me some American Romanticism

Oh my...do I really have to choose? I can't decide between Darcy, Sydney Carton and Atticus Finch. Well, actually I think I can knock Atticus off the list, he's a bit old for me. But how can I choose between those other two??? It's just not possible!

Hence the 'random other men' part. Atticus made his way on there because creepily he won some SparkNotes poll on most fanciable male b

And I would have thought that Heathcliff was a heathen...though I get what you mean. I haven't read any decidedly non-waspish ones- perhaps you could suggest some and we do poll number 2?

I have an idea for another poll that I think I mentioned to Dori... to put up the most twisted characters, or the most mentally unstable, and see who wins that one... So a poll on the most appealing anti-hero, or which character you would most like to spend the day with?

some possibilities are:
Humbert Humbert (Lolita)
Raskoljnikov
Tyler Durden
Alex (A Clockwork Orange)
Chichikov (Dead Souls)

any other suggestions? I think we should come up with a good list, and then post a thread :D

I don't think that Heathcliff is anywhere near the romantic hero, but he always gets my vote in anything, so...

hmmm.. so is this "Who's the dreamiest?" or who could win in a fight?

actually either way my vote goes to Rhett.

Also, weltanschauung, I love Cyrano. He is one of my favorite Romantic Heros.

As much as I loved Jay Gatsby and Heathcliff, I have to choose Atticus Finch - one of the most passionate, utilitarian, truth-seeking, modest individuals of all literature.

Yay! I was going to say Atticus Finch! I'd add Elwood P. Dowd in Harvey, if you count plays. but..as for pond scenes, I'd say Darcy wins hands down for ideal gorgeousness...

No chance of getting Renzo added to the list? I doubt most of you have read The Betrothed, but it is essentially The Italian novel.

I voted for Gabriel Oak because it is the kind of man that I would like to be with in reality too (Adam from East of Eden is a reliable, kind, trustworthy and hardworking man too).:thumbs_up

But I was very tempted to vote for Rochester too because he is a very exciting and interesting character, kindhearted too, with a good taste for women character (Jane Eyre is my favourite book and character) plus he is terribly sexy;). So he is the perfect hero for a novel although I wouldn't get along very well if he was a real man I am afraid.:p

I recognize most of the names but cant pin a few of them, Yossarian? Renzo?
Im really bad at names, that aside I have never seen what anyone can see either appealing or romantic in Darcy, he is just annoying in fact most romatic heroes are annoying and need a good kick or two, dont even get me started on the male Bronte charcters.. grrrrr :crash:

I haven't read the whole thread, so in chance of saying something that is already said...

Is it already to late to mention another character?

Ow what the heck, I'll do it any way ;)

Tolstoy had quite a way of describing (Russian) people, what about
Pierre Bezukhov (War and Peace)

And while I'm at it:
Jude Fawley (Jude, the Obscure)

But I guess the line should be drawn somewhere... the list really could be endless :p Let alone that it would be possible to pick just one :D
Maybe you should just every week try a "which of these 5" and then by the end of the year we'll have 52 characters to choose from?! Just a thought... there would be no way I'd read 5 books in a week though :brickwall

Hey, why not have Winston Smith from 1984??
