Once when still a boy, running through the woods
At dusk I chanced upon a body floating
In a sweet clear running stream
His wide staring eyes caught fast to mine,
Demanded entry into my worldly garden
Inexorably pulled me from my snowy idyll
Into his wilderness
And now I find myself again on the edge of that abyss
Rocking there, back and forth,
Crying out to an invisible god
A frantic litany of fear and loss
please let it be OK
please let it be OK
please let it be OK
But still I’m standing there,
And still the body floats
At dusk I chanced upon a body floating
In a sweet clear running stream
His wide staring eyes caught fast to mine,
Demanded entry into my worldly garden
Inexorably pulled me from my snowy idyll
Into his wilderness
And now I find myself again on the edge of that abyss
Rocking there, back and forth,
Crying out to an invisible god
A frantic litany of fear and loss
please let it be OK
please let it be OK
please let it be OK
But still I’m standing there,
And still the body floats
