Mantra means "To deliver the mind." A mantra can be anything from a single syllable word, such as Om, to a prayer of many verses, such as the Heart of Perfect Wisdom Sutra. Mantras usually focus on an aspect of the spirit, they can be used for healing, meditation, breaking of obstacles, or many other things. Share your favourite mantras, discuss them or what you think they mean. Here are some of mine.

I'm not a Hindu and I don't believe in mantra. However, I personally enjoy the Shanti Mantra. The first time I heard the word Shanti was from one fo the songs in Madonna's Ray of Light album and I searched further what Shanti means.

Thank you for sharing. I recognized the Englsih of the second one. I read it, a different translation, in a book by Andrew Harvey last year.

It's Govindam Adi Purusham, it's from the Brahma Samhita, it's Brahma's prayers to Lord Krishna.

venum kvanantam aravinda-dalayataksam-
barhavatamsam asitambuda-sundarangam
kandarpa-koti-kamaniya-visesa-sobham
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami

I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who is adept at playing on His flute, whose eyes are blooming like lotus petals, whose head is bedecked with peacock feathers, whose beauty is tinged with the hue of blue clouds, and whose unique loveliness charms millions of Cupids.

angani yasya sakalendriya-vrtti-manti
pasyanti panti kalayanti ciram jaganti
ananda-cinmaya-sad-ujjvala-vigrahasya
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami

I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, whose transcendental form is full of bliss, truth, and substantiality and is thus full of the most dazzling splendor. Each of the limbs of that transcendental figure possesses in itself the full-fledged functions of all the organs, and He eternally sees, maintains, and manifests the infinite universes, both spiritual and mundane.

Here is a different version of the second mantra in the original post. I know there's not much interest in today's fast paced world. But it really is a good way to get in touch with better health, relationships, life, all things like this. This one, the Gayatri mantra, is addressing the Divine. All these mantras help with breaking through obstacles in our life. The words are:

Om Bhur Bhuvah Svaha
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

One translation reads as this:

We meditate upon the spiritual effulgence of that adorable supreme divine reality
Who is the source of the physical, the astral and the heavenly spheres of existence.
May that supreme divine being enlighten our intellect, so that we may realise the supreme truth.

That translation came from this video's info:

"Tibetan Buddhist Mantra - To eliminate not only pain of diseases but also help in overcoming the major inner sickness of attachment, hatred, jealousy, desire, greed and ignorance."

I just found it online, I didn't know of it. But I recognize it, when I was at Sravasti Abbey we chanted it (I didn't know it well and messed up a lot), walking in a line. That was much faster paced than this video is.

Here's a depction of Medicine Buddha

Here's another version (this one is slightly louder).

Cool thread idea, Nik.

My mantras usually involve poems that emphasize breath. Like take for example a line from John Keats:

She look'd at me as she did love, and made sweet moan.

The words evaporate in the greater sound.

MAAAAaade SwEEEEt MOOOOOOOan.

Man, thank you Jon. :) I thought I was all by myself on this one, or - Lit-net was shunning me. :)

For me, it's a no-brainer between Buddhist/Hindu mantras and the alternative: Brand name companies repeating their company or brand name Loudly and Obnoxiously. Jeez. I need something to block it out! I have a friend in the UK who had a video apologizing to his soul for all the hours wasted sitting in front of a TV playing commercials. :D

That sounds familiar what you wrote... a mantra can also be a word or phrase which has some kind of meaning for you... like I was meditating with a group from our Presbyterian church ( just 4 of us) and the reverend said he used... I forget, but something to do with a brook, a meadow, or still waters..

Let's see... Srila Prabhupada was interviewing with a Christian monk of some order, and the monk said he used a prayer to Jesus, I forget it exactly I can probably find it.. Catholics chant on rosaries, I believe, which have 108 beads if I'm not wrong, just like Buddhist and Hindus use. I was speaking with a Buddhist Geche and he told me two mantras he used... one was Om Mani Padme Hum, I believe, and one was...perhaps, Oṃ muni muni mahāmuni śākyamuni svāhā

If u wouldn't mind explaining a bit more... what do you mean by the greater sound?

I really love this. It's the Sanskrit instead of the Tibetan pronunciation, the Tibetan I posted a couple of different versions previously. This is really auspiciuos and it has great power in elminating the causes of suffering and bondage. Just listen to it and meditate and you will see. :D

This one is very beautiful. Most of the one's I've posted have been simple and repetetive, this one is not. I'm not aware of its meaning but it's very beautiful and peaceful. Hope you like it as much as I have.

This is a very beautiful song called "Achyutam Keshavam"

the first line is
Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram
Rama Narayanam Janakivallabham

which means "praising the Lord Krishna, with different names of Vishnu"

Keshava, Damodara, Rama and Narayana are all names of Krishna. Keshava means Lord of the Universe, Damodara means the Lord when he was tied by a rope by His mother, Yashoda, Rama means the source of all pleasure, and Narayana means the Lord as He is lying in the causal ocean.

The rest of the lines are in English in the notes of the video.

Really wanted just to share this. It's incredibly peaceful, and effective or powerful to breaking karma and the causes of suffering.
