Lifesong

When the poet takes up his pen
And the winsome verse begins
A song is sung of graveyards and flowers
Of hope and life and virgin bowers
Of trees that whisper wisdom in the night
Of shadows that dance in the pale moonlight
Of the beginning and the end
The sigh of dawn and the voices of the wind
Of sea spray bright with rainbow mist
Of things that do and do not exist
For everything we do and seem
Is but a dream within a dream…

The "dream within a dream" is a quote from Poe, is it not, and I question the wisdom of using it without attribution. On the other hand there are so many fluent, songlike lines in this of which some of my favourites are:

The sigh of dawn and the voices of the wind
Of sea spray bright with rainbow mist
Of things that do and do not exist
For everything we do and seem
Is but a dream within a dream…

Pendragon

And if I too might quote or paraphrase, in this case I believe from Longfellow,

Sail on, O master of thine own fate.
Sail on, O poet strong and great!
Humanity with all its fears,
With all the hopes of future years,
Is hanging breathless on thy fate!

Sorry. Yes, the line is from Poe, one which I am certain all will recognize. I trust Poe would not mind me using it... :)
