They scare me, long and epic words
stern and alien,
like an evil aunt
constantly patting your head,
who gives you
boiled sweets
that take forever to dissolve
that solitary black sandal
someone left at the bus stop.

Silas, I think you quite captured the sense with the imagery or that there is an 'intimate unity of matter (feelings) and form (sensuous expressions)'. A brilliant piece, to me. Don't know what inspired you, the sandal first or the epics. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks white camellia! The sandal came first, and then the chicken, the egg, and then the boiled sweets. ;)
Where did the quote come from?

I am particularly struck by imagery atm. Each day here in Australia we are exposed the devastating ruins of solitary burnt out items left standing in the wake of the worst arson crimes in the history of this country. An blackened bedhead, a refrigerator, a carshell, a twisted bikeframe in the midst of forest stripped bare. Your poem brings to life very well all those scary thoughts. Thank you.

:) I didn't want to send you too many scary thoughts and images, delta, but I'm glad it got some emotional response from you.
Sounds like you want to write a poem or a short story there on those images that came to you. Work with them, if they don't twist you too much. There's plenty of places to go, there's even an 'angry poems' thread.

I liked it too. Nice and sweet. And short words...
