Do not disdain the poetry of the second rate
who try just as hard for the occasional Bravo!
To lift or win a heart
or wound an enemy.

They stand where Byron stood
and Blake, Rimbaud, Yeats and Eliot
albeit they occupy but an elfin corner
of those shadows and know
they’re candidates, at best,
for the No Bell Prize!
Their voices bawl
out in love or rage,
while their verses sprawl
across the page.

They are your brothers and sisters,
your third cousins once removed.
For we are all, in one way or another,
imperfectly loved,
second-rate.
