I am part of a discussion on another board about classifying literature based on three characteristics: (1) entertainment value; (2) level of accessibility; and (3) the message(s) conveyed.

There is a hackneyed saying about stocks; namely, that for everyone who wants to sell a share, thinking it will go down in value, there is someone who will buy it, thinking it will increase in value... when I have more time I shall relate this to your question about ranking books.
====
Well, it took me an entire 24 hours to find the time to get back here.
Just as for every stock sold, there is at least one person who thinks it will go down in price (the seller) and another person (the buyer) who thinks it will increase in price; so for every book written, there is at least one person (the author) who finds it fascinating (the best they can do), and there will always be people who hate it (no matter how great a book it is.)
