The worst thing happening in the world at present is the free market system as well as political governments whose concentrated power are in the hands of the few corporations (oligopoly) yet all operating under the guise of democracy.

Granted, this is bad, but I would wager a guess that there are other countries with governments that are much, much worse.

The world is all wrong ...
Well, no ... There are some good things around, I might dare say. So ...

I could mention the giving up of humanity to actually conquer space ...
I will also mention what humanity (us) did with the planet, and is (we are) still doing.

The lack of space quest story is the worst thing in an idealistic way;
the damaging we've been doing to the planet is the realistic worst thing.

Granted, this is bad, but I would wager a guess that there are other countries with governments that are much, much worse.

Bad life standards of your neighbour doesn't justify your medium standards ... Perhaps we should begin thinking about a government for all the ... Solar System! (Including the colonies at the Moon, Mars and Jupiterian Europe!*)

To be honest, I can't. I was speculating.

However---to make another general statement in which I shall fail to provide evidence for---I suspect that there are always people who think about their country as you do about yours (ours). Oh well.

Though it's not necessarily a bad thing. :)

Or is it also possible that I'm familiar enough with the politics and economies of other countries to make an objective statement about my own country's? ;)

In some countries, as an adult is finishing screwing a child sold into the the sex trade, for a few dollars extra they have the thrill of hammering a thick bolt straight through the child's living skull so that they can experience the ultimate pleasure as the child seizure's uncontrollably whilst they are still inside their tiny bodies. Later, when it is dark, their lifeless, limp bodies are quietly dumped to make room for the next one.

I don't care for politics. This is a dark place for all humanity.

sorry about my post. I am disgusted by the capabilities of humankind and the lengths they are prepared to go to in matters of the self.

I'd have to agree with delta.

I think cruelty, I think that's the worst. And under that would be, the abuse of power, suffering etc

You tell me! ... People come from most every place on earth (specially from rich countries -- and if more people in poor countries could, they'd do it as well) to Rio de Janeiro, for such kind of "tourism"!

This is disgusting! I can see it happen in my own town and people. And what can I do?

The only thing I can fight to do is to make this place a better place for every kid. And it's tough, but the least I can give effort to ...

Huh? Why Venezuela? [I have a dear friend who lives there]

Personally, I think that the worst thing in the world is when a person blindly goes through life and doesn't want to get their hands dirty. There is a noun to describe this, but I can't quite think of it right now. But it means someone knows that something is wrong, but they just don't want to bother with making it right, or taking action to show that they don't want to go along with it, etc., etc.

I HATE that!!! :flare:

(maybe he mentioned Venezuela because of comunism? ... It makes no difference to me. 'Never been to Venezuela, nor intend to. I'd like (and intent to) go visit Iquitos, and Lima, Peru, though ...)

Maybe the word you're looking for has something to do with to neglect? (I don't know if the "regular" noun to it exists, in English, it sounds so latinish ... neglection.)

agreed-- this is indeed a dark place for all humanity. especially those that live in poverty and awful conditions. We are privileged to even be able to talk about this topic... to say what the worst things are across a virtual world to one another.

I believe this what started the Holocaust. Hitler didn't think Jews as human beings. That's what makes it easy for people to kill.

I would say the worst thing in my eyes, is the rape, abuse and murder of children. I find it intolerable and ghastly, even to think of for one second. There are still so many children missing; for the parents and loved ones it must truly be the worst nightmare for them to bear.
