I'm curious if anyone's ever watched World Extreme Cagefighting and what you think about it considering it's a sport that comes very close to the violence in the days of Roman gladiators---minus of course the tigers and swords! Do you think this sport should be banned or for people over 21?

My absolute fav is Urijah 'The California Kid' Faber out of Sacramento and I'm going to watch him kick butt all over Jens Pulver tonight. :p

I just recorded it for my dad. He loves to watch fights. Welter-weights are so scrappy.

Andrei Arlovski vs. Tim Sylvia?

I cant stand UFC and all its spin-offs. I have issues with it mainly relating to the way despite the opponent being obviously already knocked out the other continues landing blows to his head whilst prone

I watch boxing (used to box also for a couple of years) and whilst it is brutal at times there does seem more respect between combatants. UFC to me seems like WWF for grown-ups

Oh yeah those two kick butt. I watched Sylvia pull it out, incredible. You're right about welterweights, I think they're slower-moving compared to featherweights like Urijah, even when watching in slow motion. UFC I don't like much. WEC is the kick.

But they do have the tap-out option ya know?

I know, but on occassions where they have been fighting in a standing position and one goes down obviously knocked out, the extra 3 shots to the head before the ref comes in are ridiculous - if they would institue a 10 count in these situations I would have less of a problem. Last night I watched Mosley vs Marguerito on HBO instead

When a person gets knocked out all the blood rushes up to their head and that extra punch at the end jostles it and keeps it flowing. It's actually beneficial to keep hitting them after they're knocked out.

It's the only sport I keep up with. I've been watching since UFC#3... or early '90's.

Fedor Emilianenko is the baddest man on the planet, just proved it again last night.

Sorry, not gonna buy this - the extra damage caused by being in a prone state and not being capable of protecting himself from a blow is also more likely to sustain injury.

Yes, the pac man is fantastic, I was watching his first real exposure on my copy of the lewis - tyson card a couple of days ago, even back then you can see the speed & talent.

**EDIT** Want to make it clear though, that I am not in favour of banning it - they are consenting adults that have chosen to participate in this activity that has no effect on others

I've only watched it a few times. Not sure if I've seen the cage fighting that you're referencing, but I've seen the ultimate fighting. I've not seen enough to see anything like what Kilt is saying (continuing hitting the opponent when he out) but I've seen enough to realize it's brutal. But I have to say I admire the contestants. They certainly don't get big paychecks and the discipline and training required is just for the sport. Actually what I really liked was the interviews after the event. They are certainly not rocket scientists but I love to get an insight into their grit.

Oh and it is like Roman gladiators. And my wife absoutely hates it and she hates boxing and wrestling too. :D I don't know if it should be banned. Those guys want to do it and they love the fight. As of now I don't think it's a big money maker. But I could be wrong.

I have never watched it. I'm as sure as I can be that I wouldn't like it. I wouldn't want my kids to see it either.

I do enjoy boxing and wrestling (real Olympic style wrestling). I love to box on the Wii.

Is this the one where everybody has cauliflower ears?

Not everyone has cauliflower ears... but many do :)

To me it's more interesting than wrestling (not pro), boxing, or strictly a discipline of any given martial art because it forces the real participants to become well versed in all of them.

What's infinitely interesting to me is how often it bears out that pure skill outmatches size and power. Just look at the video bigsheep posted up there. Fedor isn't a particularly imposing man, physically. He's soft spoken, respectful, generous, and completely committed to his own personal discipline. At the top level of MMA (MixedMartialArts) when the physical skill levels begin to even out, it's very much a mental chess game.

It's not about pounding someone else to death but rather about move-countermove and who has the ability and acuity to execute at that level. These are among the highest trained athletes in the world and there is no place for stupidity among them as the stupid are quickly taken advantage of and shuffled out the door.

Well, one does learn something new everyday...

:goof:

Didn't even know that "World Extreme Cagefighting" existed.
