Ahaha, koalas are awesome :D. Not that we have them in WA. One time I thought we did, but alas they exist only in zoos here. Similar thing happened when I was accidently convinced we had wild camels in the area... Which is no way possible here

We used to have a TV show for kids when I was growing up called Skippy and he was a kangaroo and we followed his adventrures in Austrailia. It was sort of like Lassie, only a kangaroo instead of a dog. But it as a fun show and I have always been fascinated by kangaroos. I love them. I have no idea what they are like in real life, but they look like so much fun. :D
Happy Austrailia Day and say hello to Skippy for me. :)

I'm confused. What's the thing being commemorated on Australia Day?
If nothing, I suggest that Australia Day entail flying kites with some color or shape scheme that reflects the soul of Australia. Just imagine seeing a sky filled with kites shaped like the kangaroo. :p

Aww thanks Libri! :D
And oh yes, Skippy , I remember when we went to Canberra and at the Film and Sound Archives we were watching all these various clips and the guy said "Okay we're about to watch Skippy, if any of you know the theme song, feel free to sing along." And everyone did . We have kangaroos around the place quite a bit. In year 8 the kangaroos would come up into our school and go right by the windows. I shall hello to one of them for you if I can't find Skippy :D;)
And Australia Day is our national day, basically commemorating the arrival of the First Fleet, when Europeans, yes, including many convicts :p, first started settling Australia.
Haha, Paul Hogan :D , yes he is very important too :p

 Hey I thought that guy Paul Hogan was dead. Um...maybe not? :p
no, he is still alive. As far as we all know.
And Virg yes I prefer kangaroos too. Koalas might look all soft and cuddly, but they aren't all that friendly :p. Neither are kangaroos at that, but they tend to come up to you more often :).
And  mom-h, when I saw that pic and the mentions of Hogan, I started getting them mixed in my mind, with Captain Feathersword saying "That's not a sword... THIS is a sword" :D

Happy Aussie Day! I read a novel about Western Australia not long ago and the main character was new to the area and went out with his mates and got too close to a male Kangaroo, who was protecting his family; the kangaroo almost crushed him to death. Can that really happen, if they are cornered or threatened? They described him as a very large kangaroo and quite powerful, strong.
Now Koalas are native to Australia, right? Maybe they are in zoos now to protect their species. They must still have some in the wild, I would imagine. My neighbor was born in Australia and when her family went to visit she brought back addresses of kids we could write to as penpals. I learned a lot about the country then conversing with a young student. I recall my neighbor taught us in Girl Scouts all about the native animals and I am sure Koalas were included in that list.

Aren't there still some 'wild' camels in Northern Territory, Sprinks? Perhaps they should more accurately be called 'feral' as they were set free after being used to haul supplies in the building of the telegraph line/railway line through the territory - the hotel I stayed in at Ayers Rock had a 'camel' theme in the dining room and had some amazing photographs enlarged as murals.
I got quite good at spotting koalas asleep in gum trees whilst travelling through some of the national parks, so much so that I had a 'dohhh!' moment this summer: a lot of eucalyptus trees were taken from Australia and planted in South Africa because they grow quickly and grow straight, so they were used for pit props etc in the development of the mines there. I woke up from a doze on a long coach journey somewhere in KwaZulu Natal to see we were travelling through a forest of gum trees and thought, 'Ah, good koala country, let's see if I can spot one...' Took me a moment to wake up properly and remember I was on the wrong continent. (It gave the Aussies in the party a good laugh when I confessed to my lapse that evening at dinner - 'Wrong kind of gum', I was told.)

Yes, kangaroos can do that. If you'll ever seen the damage a kangaroo can do to a car, you'll see how powerful they are. Their legs are incredible when they kick out!
Yes, koalas are native to here, but not in WA. WA is mostly desert, koalas need eucalyptus trees and the like - therefore, no wild koalas here.
Same theory with camels. You get them in NT and even in central WA, but not on the coast, with all the cities.

Oh nice! I watched the Perth ones. Haha I swear "AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE, OI OI OI!" is like a secret code shared between all Australians . It's all you could hear all day. It didn't matter where you were, if someone yelled "AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!" someone, somewhere, would respond . Even on the packed train home!

Very true. The atmosphere is so different in real life. Thousands of people all united by shouting those words, it's quite amazing.
Oh, and no problemo, Jo! :) I hope she had a wonderful, firework filled night :D
Ohhh it was a partial eclipse last night as well! My genius friends decided to look directly at it
Here's me and the big flag that got flown around by a helicopter through the day:
