I'm not sure about finding quality literary essay sites that are free on the internet. Most of the ones I know require a university connection or monthly fee.

Ultimately the library is gonna be your best source.

Depends - databases are your friend - if you have a public library with an online database, or a university, or high-school database at your disposal, look there first.

Otherwise, nothing good will come of the internet, and scholarship isn't free unless it is dated. All amateur scholarship, well 99% of it anyway, happens to suck. Sparknotes however, is free, though that isn't literary, more commercial - Literary I think are essays that expect you know the book at a level better than the spark notes can give you.

Well if by essays you mean an umbrella term which also includes journals I'd definitely try and log into a university/library computer in order to get articles from JSTOR. I'd try Project Muse and Springer Link (though the latter is more for medical journals) if I were you -- I've had university internet for so long that I can't even remember if you can access them through a normal computer...

It does take a long time to find websites with free essays, but I did find some, although they al involve Jane Eyre and Victorian literature...

Some are course work of students, but there are also PHD dissertations on there sometimes. You just have to keep looking and define the subject very well on google, then you are more likely to get past the commercial ones.

are you talking academic journals here you are after? Because thanks to the Open Access movment there are quite a few of these floating around the internet. Also alot of academics now have blogs where theyve begun posting parts of there work. :D
