View Full Version : All Nighters

A thread kind of dedicated to lima and her all nighter tonight.
So how do litnetters go about pulling an all nighter? Only do it when you're cramming? Only when friends are over? Can you even manage it at all? What weapons do you use to stay up all night, coffee, energy drinks, sheer determination?

Many people here know that I'm always here until the early hours of the morning, telling me to go to bed :p:lol:. Although they tend to be accidental all nighters when I've lost track of time :p

It's just naturally not very difficult to fight off sleep for me usually. When I was out of station for about a week I am quite sure I wouldn't have got more than three hours of sleep per night on average. All relatives there thought I was from some other planet or something because I just always appeared to be awake. Change of place really affects me. So do many other things. if I have a headache, I have trouble sleeping. If I have cold, I have trouble going to bed. If I have school-work left to do, I have trouble going to sleep. If I have a question troubling me, I can spend hours pondering about it sleeplessly. If I have got a book ending to follow, sleep just naturally comes with a great difficulty to me.

AND if I have got some interesting posts to read on litnet, then sleep becomes an enemy too. :p Actually I do need more of weapons to get me to sleep....

Ooh a thread dedicated to me :)

It's not even late but i've had my two red bulls already ;)

Haha how well I know what you're saying Pensive :D

Yes you get to be special :D. Oh that doesn't sound nice. Reminds me of the time I accidently drank soy sauce. I was in pain for the rest of the night :(. I've never tasted any energy drinks, I'm not sure I really want to...

Zee.
01-21-2009, 06:41 AM
I don't like them very much.

I saw a really cool energy drink at the supermarket, it had superman on the front - I emptied it because it looked hellishly dodgy, and kept the can.
Some nights I can stay up naturally, without any assistance. :D

haha nice! :D I remember one time our form teacher was lecturing my friend who was drinking Mother, about how it isn't good for you and how caffeine makes you gain weight, so then another friend of mine and I decided that it bought a whole new meaning to the song I Got It From My Mama, so we walked around singing "Tell me girl where'd ya get your body from? I got it from drinking Mother"

2010, 2010... just you wait :p
When one of my friends stayed over we had a Futurama and Guitar Hero marathon. Mostly we all have Bring It On (cheesy cheerleading movies) marathons :D

I have this weird thing about staying at friend's houses. I just, don't like to do it.
I dunno why - it's kind of weird, but i've never felt comfortable with it. It's not them or anything. I think it's just being away from my bed hehe.

Ive managed to stay up for 3 consecutive nights until passing out on my front drive way around midday on the 4th day. Woke up in the afternoon the next day in the exact same spot, just very dirty and confused.

Stayed up naturally, get a little tired at around 6am, but give it an hour and i get all my energy back as the sun rises.

I understand that.
We are so having a Bring It On Marathon then :D. My friend fell asleep during the 2nd one! I had to watch the other 2 alone :(

I kid, I kid. Don't worry, I only have one other friend who can stay up like I can. All the rest pass out within minutes.
You're not that much older than me!! I think I even eluded to you not being old in the anonymous message thread! :p

It's weird, when I don't get enough sleep I get this strange sad feeling - cured by sleep of course.

sprinks
01-21-2009, 07:12 AM
Perhaps it has to do with lack of energy?

Zee.
01-21-2009, 07:13 AM
Nah, it's pretty bad. I get all blah on myself, and think terrible thoughts and mull over dead and buried things.

:( I dunno, it's like waking up clears that feeling

sprinks
01-21-2009, 07:15 AM
Oh I get you. Kinda makes sense, when you wake up it's generally a new day, unless you slept through the day and wake up at night... anywho, like your mind is normally fresh and empty when you wake up.
I just hate distressing dreams. Or awesome dreams that turn out to not be real when I thought it was :(

ohhh I remember when I first joined here. I was sick and had a week off school and pretty much lived on litnet . Every night was an all nighter on here. I don't think it did much for my illness!!

When I was a bachelor it did happen once in a while that I looked up from a good book only to realise that it was time to go to work instead of bed. Oops! The first hours of those working days were ok, but the afternoon usually amounted to a near death experience.

I pulled several all-nighters in high school. Since then not really except for working the night shift. The first time I did the night shift was really hard. but after that I got a system, caffeine, water, snacks, and walking around occasionally.

How do you guys do it?

I'll be determined to stay up, but it's all in vain... my eyes get heavy and I just sleep, no matter where I'm positioned or what's going on around me.

I feel like such a failure :(

Hey, has anyone ever fallen asleep in the bath? That's really scary.

Hey, has anyone ever fallen asleep in the bath? That's really scary.Sure I have. Many times. The trick is to be tall enough not to be able to slide under the surface. :yawnb:

On that note, a friend of mine actually fell asleep on a bicycle in motion (ouch!). That bloke was able to fall asleep anytime and anywhere.

I pulled 58 hours once on the day before delivery of my first semester project. I'm amased we didn't crash considering the title was; Working conditions for eastern Europeans on the danish labour market. ... We hadn't really gotten our rears in gear and had to write straight for 48 hours, that's a little over a page of highly dense academic text writing per minute. It wasn't very good. after delivery at nine in the morning i went straight to work for a christmas ten hour shift.... I got sent home since i was so exhausted that i wasn't responding. :)

meh pulling all nighters isnt difficult the problem is if you do try and take a short nap you end up grumpy the rest of the day ( or at least I do!) Usally I pull all nighters to meet a deadline, because Ive got a really really good book I cant put down or because Im running one of the litnet live reads ( which will hopefully recommence this year!) now for the live reads which suprisingly requires more brain power than essay writing I tend to guzzle coffeecola (discussting stiff) but the only way I can keep up with litnet madness at 5am ( without slepp as I am frequantly already awake by 5 am!) :D

Lima, I can't believe you drank two RedBulls at once! They're soo bad for you (not to mention disgusting)/ I can't drink energy drinks...

I can stay up all night though! And do, every once in a while. It's normal for me to stay up really late, but then I just sleep in late the next day. My most alert hours of the day are from 11pm till 4am. That's why you'll often find me around here then...

I don't do it if I'm cramming- if I'm cramming for an exam I have to get some sleep, even if it's only two hours.

I tend to stay up all night if I'm reading or watching movies. I just lose track of time because I'm so much more alert.

Lily Adams
01-21-2009, 07:29 PM
I've done three. I've only been awake for more than 24 hours once, though, and that was a few weeks ago! Derned insomnia! Two of them were fun, the third and latest one wasn't.

I've never done the cramming thing. To me that seems to defeat the purpose of studying. You'll be too tired come time for the test to concentrate and remember what you studied for all night! Plus everything would blur together, I would think.

Although they tend to be accidental all nighters when I've lost track of time :p

As soon as I hit 40 I've developed an odd sort of narcolepsy. I can fall asleep anytime, anywhere. Of course, I do only get about 5 hours of sleep per night so it might just be my beat-to-**** old body sending me hints.

I never did all nighters. I stayed up late, but I did get sleep at a reasonable hour. What was reasonable? I don't recall, say 1 or 2 AM. I would be too wiped out the next day if I went beyond that. Sleep is good for you.

Ok youngsters listen to Virg.

**All right, responsible adult bit now done;)**

I used to pull all nighters at college on a regular basis, generally drinking & playing cards - but then I had to pull all nighters to do the assignments I hadnt finished as a result.

I did once work a 23hr shift because of a sewer break - most ehausted I've ever been.

 I'm typically an insomniac, I've really screwed up my sleep schedule! I'm used to being out all night at parties, or clubs, and even when I'm at home, I get my creative outbursts at night! Even when I want to sleep, the dog keeps me up all night!

The trouble is staying up in the day!

I've stayed up for 10 days straight once, out of sheer anxiety. It was pretty fantastic *sarcasm*. Also, once, my pony was due to foal her baby and took four freakin' days to foal! I was out at the barn for four days straight too worried to sleep, watching her 24/...4... haha. Tea, tea, tea, more tea, and video games on a GameBoy did the trick.

Ouch. That's pretty crazy. Once I worked a 16 hr shift, then went to straight to teach a couple of classes, then back to work a few hrs later for my regular 8 hr shift. that was pretty horrible. I can manage to stay up ok if I'm studying or just hanging out, but going to work after having had no sleep is awful.
