Here's a question place for all those perplexing questions we need answered. I've got lots, all connected though:

Why is it that people from the U.S. never say they are from the U.S., or North America, and instead say that they are from Colorado, the North West, or from the South? Maybe everyone around the world knows your state's location? Or are the states countries in their own right?

If I switch this round, would this be OK?...
If I said I was from Canterbury, Southland, or the West Coast would most of you know where I was from? Or if I was Chinese, could I tell you I was from Heilongjiang, Guanxi, or Zhejiang?

Just an observation. I'm not dissing you Americans.:)

Just a few questions on words...:)
Why is a 'wise man' different from a 'wise guy'?
Why is it called a TV set when it's only one?
Why does 'fat chance' and 'slim chance' mean the same thing?
When you say 3 out of 5 people suffer from diarrhea, does that mean 2 of the people enjoy it?
Do 'slippers' cause you to slip?

Well, culturally we weren't taught to think or act 'globally' until fairly recently. Looking back to my own school curricula I remember a lot of US history and a proportionally much smaller amount of world history. That's not to say that this is representative of all experience, but it is representative of mine and what I would call a norm based on my experience.

There's that and then whenever I tell someone I'm from the US the inevitable follow up is 'really, where in the states?'

Now I say US-Texas.

taken to mean the same thing??

I call people from the US "Uessians" or "Ussians", because being American isn't exclusitity of those born in the United States. I'm from Brasil, Portuguese America, they from the United States of America, English America.

I'm as American (and proud of being so) as them, however VERY (intrinsically, fundamentally (...)) different. I speak Portuguese (Latin), they speak English (barbaric language, yakes!!!).

Apart from the barbaric commentary, I mean all the rest. Spanish populations call Uessians, "Estadunidenses" (= "Unitestaters"), and, in Brasil, more and more, (thinking) people prefer to call them Uessians, which is, in Portuguese, Estado-unidenses, but many use the Spanish expression, "Estadunidense".

I call myself, among my own compatriots, a (Portuguese) American, Portuguese (or Modern Latin) speaking, of Italian origin (fifth generation), and proud Carioca (= born in Rio de Janeiro).

Nation is a concept of the late Middle Ages. I hope more and more, cities can be independant from cities, like in the days of Rome and the Greeces, when democracy was practiced, in towns (never in nations ...).

I'm very utopic ...

Many people might not realize that this is an international forum. I know I didn't when I joined. I was rather surprised at how international it was. So when you assume it's an American forum, one's natural inclination is to list their home city/state rather than country, country being assumed.

Even as an American, I have noticed this, too. In size comparison, the U.S. does appear a large country to most others, but so does China, Russia, Australia, yet our population does not compare even to countries like India or certain parts of Mexico.
I will not act so bluntly as Socrates when someone asked him where he originated, and he replied 'the world,' but perhaps next time, when someone asks me where I came from, I will say the United States or North America, and test the reaction. :)

If bread lands butter side down and cats land on their feet, what would happen if I buttered the back of a cat?

Okay, I have a few questions:
Even though ATM stands for Automated Teller Machine, why do so many people insist upon calling it an 'ATM machine'?

Many magazine and newspaper ads advertise a 'free gift' with this purchase. Does anyone else find the 'free' part in the term 'free gift' redundant? All gifts are free! Last Christmas, when I bought my younger brother a Wii, I do not remember charging him for it.

I always see car lots selling 'pre-owned cars;' I know, by 'pre-owned' cars, they mean once-owned cars, and again for sale, but does anyone else find the term 'pre-owned' redundant, too? Of course the cars are pre-owned! No one would sell an owned car! :eek2:

I partially stole this from the film Stand By Me, but, seriously, what kind of animal is Goofy?

What can I say?? I'm no fan of Star Trek at all ... I hate the movies with the old guys. (I hope I'll like the one that's about to come, but ... lets see.) The only Star Trek movie of the old ones I like is the #4, in which they return to the past to save the whales. I love that movie. It's very funny. Maybe because the director was mr. Spo// erm, Leonard Neemoy.

That's the question the computer at Vulcan asks mr. Spock: [metalic_voice] "how do you feel?", the only question he can't answer! haha!

Why do people buy sweaters for their dogs?

Red thing is because of the lights out there, on the streets ...
Blue one, I've got no idea, but it's my favourite colour! :) (I know this doesn't help much ...) Maybe because it's the colour of the sky, in sunny days ...

People get sweaters for their dog either because they think they're feeling cold, or because they think they'll look prettier. Eeither reason is silly, anyway. As silly as to collect playmobil after the 15s ...

... Maybe we need silly things to be ourselves

Why, Mr. Anderson? Why do you do it? Why get up? Why keep fighting? Do you believe you're fighting for something? For more than your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it freedom? Or truth? Perhaps peace? Yes? No? Could it be for love? Illusions, Mr. Anderson. Vagaries of perception. The temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as the Matrix itself, although only a human mind could invent something as insipid as love. You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You must know it by now. You can't win. It's pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Why do you persist?

If I travel fast enough, can I arrive before I've left?Actually, the answer is yes, sort of. If you go faster than the speed of light, there are some inertial frames in which you will arrive before you left. Of course, it is supposed to be impossible to go faster than the speed of light.

what is the evolutionary/survival/adaptive function of hair on one's head? By this I mean, why do some cultures have predominantly dark and curly hair, while some have light hair, or like in Japan or China, predominantly straight hair?

Most of our traits have some function (different eye shapes and skin color in accordance with climate; eyebrows and eyelashes to keep sweat or dust out respectively, types of bodies in accordance with the agriculture or labor one has to perform, etc. but I don't see the purpose of curly hair versus straight hair)

I have a question too though.

What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow??!!?

ok, here is another one...

what is the evolutionary/survival/adaptive function of hair on one's head? By this I mean, why do some cultures have predominantly dark and curly hair, while some have light hair, or like in Japan or China, predominantly straight hair?

Most of our traits have some function (different eye shapes and skin color in accordance with climate; eyebrows and eyelashes to keep sweat or dust out respectively, types of bodies in accordance with the agriculture or labor one has to perform, etc. but I don't see the purpose of curly hair versus straight hair)

Sun and UV light.
It was very sunny and hot in Africa, so evolution made her job. People got darker skin and curly hair, because UV light in that way can't harm to skin and head that much.
People moved to northern parts, their skin didn't need to be that dark so it became white, and their hair became lighter and straighter. Of course, some still have dark hair :D

I don't know from where you are and if you had noticed it, but here; when people from continental parts go to the seaside during summer, their hair becomes lighter, like they colored upper parts of hair (sorry for lousy haircut terminology )

Yeah I get that part. But why do many Asians have JET black hair, while a lot of Latin Americans have brown to black hair... and how does the curliness affect that? I get the differences in hair color (just as in skin color, as I noted)... and then you have a lot of Africans, for example, that are pretty hairless, or keep their hair really really short (such as the Bushmen), and don't need the protection from the sun as much necessarily because they already have really dark skin...

I just wonder what advantage could curly hair or straight hair have?? maybe it is evolution by choice... picking mates we like better and thus passing on that trait.

Sun beams fight harder against curly hair then straighter.
JET? Evolution is really long, were talking about thousands or millions of years, it's impossible to change some things so quickly. Skin is naturally darker because of Sun, but maybe after 100 000 years, Afroamericans won't be that dark. Same things is for hair, I guess. Too bad we won't live enough to see what will happen.

Why do Africans or Afroamericans keep their hair short - I don't know; I guess that is matter of personal choice. Ask them, if you want.

you misunderstood me... I am not talking about Africans keeping their hair short, but about tribes doing so... tribes that are considered as the first homosapiens (in fact they don't grow really long curly hair either). ahh, it doesn't matter... all traits HAD some purpose I suppose...and some things are useless now like the appendix or the tail bone. And I am sure curly hair was advantageous to people living in hotter climates. Though China can get REALLY hot and really humid, yet they have straight hair (generally).

anyway, enough about this, it was more of a silly question anyway...and not something I need a definitive answer to. :)

Woll, that's odd!
Are you sure you're a girl?!

(kidding :D )

Actually, the best girls are those who walk among boys, and play knights! (Specially in playmo')~

Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

"Half a moment!" cried Bilbo, who was still thinking uncomfortable about eating. Fortunately he had once heard something rather like this before, and getting his wits back he thought of the answer. "Wind, wind of course," he said, and he was so pleased that he made up one on the spot. "This'll puzzle the nasty underground creature," he thought:

An eye in a blue face
Saw an eye in a green face.
"That eye is like to this eye"
Said the first eye,
"But in low place,
Not in high place."
